Have you ever really watched the way he moves? He moves like a much older man, which indicates a lack of natural flexibility, as does his total lack of running speed. Therefore, the injuries make sense. We caught lightning in a bottle last year. Maybe I'm wrong. No, I HOPE I'm wrong. Plus, I'd like to see Riley in a Braves uniform. Now that won't happen. I think this too is grasping a bit at reasons to hate a JD deal. Moving like a much older man? Sorry dude.. that's just pulling crap out of your backside. I thought he moved pretty well all things considered. He's a power hitting 3b.. you really expect speed out of that? I would like to see Riley in a Braves uni as well, and it can still happen if he can prove he can actually hit ML sliders... which he has not done. I would love to see Riley succeed here but what I want most of all is for the Braves to win a title. Ask me if I think that's more likely with Riley in 2020 and 2021 or JD.. Plus the point I have tried to make is seemingly ignored. This move does not cripple us if it doesn't work. If JD falters and Riley and/or Camargo are truly viable options, then we can still succeed. This is the "go for it" move that actually makes a little bit of sense... and it doesn't sacrifice top prospects. We shall see. Someone mentioned he moves like a big guy. He's not that big. He's stiff. Dale Murphy was the same way. Look at his numbers after he turned 34. Ditto Dave Justice. It's a valid argument whether you want to admit it or not. Look at Kurt Suzuki. Very flexible body type. Ditto Yadier Molina, and they're catchers. Nolan Ryan pitched forever because of off the charts flexibility. I could go on, but you get my point.

Who mentioned he moves like a big guy? He's 6'1" and 210.. I thought he was pretty flexible over there at 3b and pretty much like a guy who was 6'1" and 210. I didn't notice any inability to bend over and field his position. In fact he made some very athletic plays.
I can also grab some random names who played well at age 38, but that is no more valid of an argument than the one you are making using random names that played other positions.
Dale Murphy was stiff? He was a premiere CF for a few years and once stole 30 bases.

I'd love to see the stiffness factor calibration methodology

I'd love to see the stiffness factor calibration methodology Talk to nightman, I'm sure he has a machine laying around somewhere that measures that.

Look at those thumbnail pictures for that video--stiff as a bored.

I totally get the argument that his skills may diminish quickly as it often happens with guys his age.
I get a bit less an injury concern because of his one big injury, but okay..
I get he is not a fast runner, but that is irrelevant..
but I think this "stiff" thing and random player comparisons is reaching for something I don't see at all.

It's worth noting I am a bit wary of a 4 year Donaldson as well, I am just not seemingly quite as convinced it will really screw us up if it doesn't work out like we hope in years 3 and 4.

I have some concern with possible injuries with JD, but this is my biggest concern--this is pretty common among players who are past their prime. Once this happens you're done.
Goldschmidt is 32 and had a pretty pedestrian season this year for a $26M/year ballplayer. And the Cardinals went 5 years $130M on him, which is good if he continues to fall off.

It's worth noting I am a bit wary of a 4 year Donaldson as well, I am just not seemingly quite as convinced it will really screw us up if it doesn't work out like we hope in years 3 and 4. I do think it's real significant moneywise if he fails, that's two really good (not elite but really good) players it kept us from having.
But I also get the mentality of feeling like it increases our odds of winning a World Series or two. I don't agree with the size of the gamble, I think it's nuts, but I at least understand the thinking.
I do have some concerns about his defense as the years go by as well. There's a lot of raving about his defense in 2019, but he only had a 2.1 UZR/150, not like the old days for him. I think what happened is that he made a lot of great plays that caught people's eye, but then he also muffed a lot of easier plays too.
All we can really do is see how it plays out and hope he stays healthy and productive.

Food for thought.
When we sign JD, it is going to thrill a massive majority of our fan base. They'll feel like we're "going for it" finally.
When the organization announces the chop is going to be taken away, it's going to really piss off a massive majority of our fan base.
But the organization will be able to say yeah we really hate we have to do this, we don't want to but we're being forced to do it....but hey look, we're going for it!
It will work like a charm.
I'm not saying it's the only reason we're going to sign JD, but it would help explain some of the desperation to continue to raise the years and dollar amount to where it is now.
What better way to offset the fans anger when the chop is officially taken away?
Will there be an official announcement?
Possibly no if they just stop playing the music, but they'll definitely have to make an announcement at some point if they are going to try to discourage or even stop fans from doing it on their own.

Whatever the rationale, it's not gonna be a good move. IMO. Hell, the gnats backed off after losing Rendon, and they're a big budget team, at least compared to the Braves. Hope I'm eating lots of crow!
