Two years for $17.5M.
This guy is another mystery as to why we never considered him. Kind of poor defensively and can't hit lefties, but a combo of him, Riley and Duvall could cover LF nicely in a platoon, with Riley and Camargo also covering 3B, and use the JD money elsewhere. Dickerson has a career OPS of .866 and a wRC+ of 125 against RHP. A much better option than using Nick out there as a lefty hitter. In fact Dickerson is a better defensive player than Nick. More money, but not significant, and a much better player. Use the money somewhere else, even if it means adding a FA pitcher or power bat next year or the year after. I don't know, whatever!
Yea...he's a pretty good player when used correctly. He played well for the Phillies after they got him last year. Not sure why so many team passed on this guy other than maybe they didn't want to pay $8M for a part time player.

Maybe we are possibly looking at replacing the wrong IF with the wrong Rockie. How about Swanson and Wright for Story? Placed it in that trade calculator and the values came out just about dead even. Story has two more years, $11.5 million a year. Lineup would look like this:
RF Acuna 2B Albies 1B Freeman SS Story LF Markakis 3B Riley C d’Arnaud CF Inciarte
Pache would eventually replace Markakis. And we would still have Anderson, Wilson and Muller as potential pieces for the rotation. Plus, we wouldn’t be tied down to JD’s age/contract, Arenado’s contract or face losing the prospect capital it would take to get Bryant.
Just a thought.

I don’t like the idea of giving up Wright for two years of Story, but if we could work a better trade there I’d be all for it. It’s funny that Camargo gave us a 3.7 WAR in 2018 and got kicked to the curb, yet Dansby has given us a 2.8 WAR in the last three years combined and he’s pure gold.

Yeah, the Camargo thing is hard to figure.......impossible to figure, actually. I really don't want to give up Wright in any trade. He may well be a bust, but he could also be an ace. I just don't see trading a guy like him at this point. You have to understand that deGrom didn't break in until he was 26, and Wright just turned 24. Seems waiting on deGrom paid off pretty nicely. The same could happen with Wright.

Wilson, De la Cruz and Swanson gets about the same value on the simulator as Swanson and Wright.

And my proposal is to replace Swanson at SS, keeping Riley/Camargo for 3rd

Good point, always have to consider that with these Colorado players......Story's road stats are not spectacular.
.250/.313/.443/.756 for his career with a 99 wRC+

No. I think we are going to end up signing JD 4 years and I guess, trading Riley since he will be blocked. Like the prospects of having that same 1st four in the lineup for 2020 and maybe 2021. But not loving the long term over commitment to a 34 year old.

If he stays healthy he's still prone to ending up having trouble keeping up with the fastball, it already happened to Goldschmidt this year.

If the Braves are really set on Donaldson, what about some creativity? Since we have Freeman to sign in a few years, how about 4/$110 with $30M deferred at $10M/yr for three years after the contract. This only hits at $20M/yr for 4 years and $10M/yr for the three years after that. Allows more flexibility now and the $10M owed later will be less of a factor after year 4. Just a thought.

Ummm, that's very Swanson-like, no?

This is the type of approach I've been wanting to see. Seems to me it helps Donaldson, too. Sitting on your arse and drawing $10 million per for 3 years sounds like a pretty sweet deal to me.
