I'm not disagreeing with you about any of that. I am just trying to give insight into the mind of the manager who is probably asking the GM to fulfill the needs he sees with guys he thinks can do that.

Isn't it really splitting hairs between Ozuna and Castellanos? They're essentially the same player.
The only major difference between the two is that MLBTR has Castellanos getting 5-years, and Ozuna getting 3-years.

The only major difference between the two is that MLBTR has Castellanos getting 5-years, and Ozuna getting 3-years. The other differences would be the draft pick and in my mind the visual pain of watching Ozuna play the outfield and try to throw the ball. I think I'd feel encouraged Castellanos could improve since he's only been playing the OF for two years. Ozuna's arm does not look to me like it has any prayer of getting better.

Well, if the Braves get Ozuna or Castellanos, they wouldn’t be getting JD, so they’d essentially be trading one draft pick for a better one by letting JD walk. Or they could sign Castellanos and Moose, and gain a pick. Totally understandable.

Claim Villar. Why not? He can play.

Claim Villar. Why not? He can play. He would be by far the best SS on our team if we did. But won't someone else surely claim him before we could?
I don't get this move by the Orioles, it seems pretty chickenshmidt......they can't pay him $10M for one more year? I bristle at the constant chatter against teams tanking, but this isn't really a case of a team trying to get better in the long run by "tanking", this is just a money dump, and it's not even that much money for a guy who was a 2 WAR last and a 4 WAR this year, jeez.........and he's only 28. Strikes out a lot, but most players do nowadays. Can't say much else against him.

Claim him? Orioles couldn’t even trade him. Totally weird.

So, is it bye bye Culberson or Camargo? I don't think they'll claim him because there would be too much pressure to play him over Dansby.
Villar has just had a 3 WAR season, a 2 WAR season and a 4 WAR season in three of his last four years. wRC+ during those years was 120, 93 and 107. That's not even in the same ballpark as Dansby. Villar even had better defensive numbers than Dansby this year, although they were close. And the stolen bases for Villar for the last four years......62, 23, 35 and 40. You can't make that guy a back up player, and you wouldn't pay him $10M to be a backup player. I'm not a long term Dansby fan, I'd love to see us add Villar but I'll bet there's zero percent chance we will.
Villar hasn't played much 3B but maybe could? Hell he's a better player than Moustakas.

blogs.fangraphs.com/has-jonathan-villar-played-himself-out-of-baltimore/Interesting take from fangraphs. Truth be told, the Braves aren't looking to make any moves up the middle, so he's out. He hasn't played 3rd since 2016, I believe, so I don't think he'd be a good fit there. Ya, and $10m for a backup is too high. I didn't know it was that high, TBH.

Yeah I can see how we're better off with Dansby than this guy:
"Across all of baseball, only Alex Bregman, Marcus Semien, Anthony Rendon, and J.T. Realmuto compiled more WAR after July 24 than Villar. "

Didn’t you say something about cost being important? How much is Swanson making?

Didn’t you say something about cost being important? How much is Swanson making? Sure but come on there has to be a balance between cost and actual performance, and the performance level difference is pretty drastic. We've thrown out there the idea of signing Rendon for eleventy billion dollars, Ozuna or Castellanos for $15M/yr for 3 or 4 years, Moustakas for a sizeable amount for several years (not sure the exact expectations), Bumgarner.....so is $10M a lot for one year for a guy who has proven to be a whole lot better than our SS? Don't we want to upgrade if it's sensible, like we upgraded at 3B last year? We had a 3B who in one year (2018) equaled the career WAR of our current SS who has played three full seasons in the big leagues, and yet we upgraded over THAT guy with a $23M one year deal but wouldn't upgrade over the SS now for $10M??? Don't we have enough money to play with that $10M is chicken feed in order to get a lot better at one of our positions? Don't mind me, I'm just entertaining myself, I know it's NEVER going to happen. We can take away his Dansby Swanson when we pry him from Snit's cold, dead fingers.
If it was up to me I'd sign Villar and try to extend him a few years and trade Dansby for bullpen arms.
I think Dansby's is making $3.33M, so it's not like he's one of these half million to $1.5M guys.
