It seems I’ll be in the minority on this, but would it be the worst thing in the world for the Braves not to get bogged down in a long term contract and just wait a little longer for the likes of Pache, Waters, and Riley to cement themselves on the MLB roster? I know we’ve been spoiled the last two years, but I’m thinking maybe a step back might lead to a longer term of success than trying to fill holes with money, on older players. Just a thought. I don’t feel a need to spend the JD money right now just because we have it. If the right deal isn’t there now we still have that money to use at any point over the next couple years if we want to when the right situation does come along. I'm okay with standing pat if the alternative is "bogged down with a long term contract". The real issue is what you define as "bogged down with a long term contract". 4 years? Then again, and I’ve been slowly coming around to the idea, Nick Castellanos is only 27. If there’s a chance his defense could improve he’d be a good get. You’d have to probably say goodbye to waters, or pache, but if they swing them for a legit TOR starter, not some over the hill was once a TOR guy, I could live with it.

4 years of what? See what I mean? There are some things I would be fine with. What if we signed NC for 4 years and he gave us around 3.0 WAR every year? and what price are we talking about?
Does that pass the "saddled with" threshold?

Who was the guy with the worn out arm that we signed a few years ago? He made several good starts for us, and then his arm gave out again I think 🤔 He was an ace at one time. Geezus. Can't think of his name.

Come on, help a man out. Who was it? I thought of it when the King Felix signing was announced, but can't remember the name, and google is no help.

I may be echoing what you said in the most recent reply, but in the first post when you mentioned it, you only said "It seems I’ll be in the minority on this, but would it be the worst thing in the world for the Braves not to get bogged down in a long term contract and just wait a little longer for the likes of Pache, Waters, and Riley to cement themselves on the MLB roster?" There was no mention of performance... just "not bogged down with a long term contract".

Ben Sheets??
Didn't he have a lifetime record around .500?
I know record isn't the best gauge of a pitcher, but I never thought of him being an ace.
