Maybe...I know this is unlikely wishful thinking, but maybe they’re going to raise payroll. I hope. There's no reason we can't be a $170 million payroll team. They’re just using the money they spent mid season, this off season, in my estimation.

Ya, erred by naming Martin, but even taking him out, it’s a solid bullpen. Also, I’d venture a guess that the Braves could find an equally effective, less expensive, option to replace him. Braves just signed Martin 2 years $14M! Interesting journey for Martin "Prior to landing far and away the largest contract of his professional career, Martin, has had one of the most fascinating odysseys in all of baseball (as most recently chronicled by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution’s Tim Tucker). Drafted out of high school in ’04 and junior college in ’05, Martin opted not to sign in either instance and ultimately went undrafted in 2006. He signed on to play on the independent circuit but underwent shoulder surgery that he believed would end his baseball aspirations. Years later, after working as a UPS driver and working at Lowe’s, a game of catch with a friend brought about the realization that his surgically repaired shoulder no longer caused him pain. A second indie ball stint was parlayed into a minor league deal with the Red Sox, who traded Martin to the Rockies in 2013. Just four years removed from delivering packages and driving a forklift, Martin made his MLB debut with the Rockies in 2014. Brief stints with the Rox and Yankees didn’t yield favorable results, and Martin ultimately found his first seven-figure contract pitching overseas for the Nippon Ham Fighters in Japan. His dominance in NPB led to a two-year, $4MM deal with the Rangers. Prior to today’s announcement, Martin’s career earnings between MLB and NPB checked in south of $7MM."

Starting to feel slightly optimistic that the Braves will raise payroll, or should I be pessimistic and get ready to hear that the Braves will trade prospects?

Starting to feel slightly optimistic that the Braves will raise payroll, or should I be pessimistic and get ready to hear that the Braves will trade prospects? I don't think they will trade Pache or Waters, the low cost home grown potential dream OF of Acuna Jr and the two kids is too enticing even if it takes another yr to wait for Don't see them trading Wright or Anderson either Hey, early returns seem to lead toward the Braves raising payroll. They are not as cheap as they used to be, cannot call anyone who spends that kind of dollars in the pen cheap. Third base will be interesting though - Riley just might be the guy we saw early on but we do not know The next big prize I would like is Mad Bum for 3 yrs. Other than Cole and a couple of other guys I don't see teams giving a SP the 7 yr deals they have been given in the recent past. Most of em do not work for most teams And yes, got to get a veteran catcher who is better than average defensively. The OPS+ can be around 75 to 85 as long as the D is outstanding - got to research who can fit that role

Curious about the plan for Contreras since he has to take up a 40 man spot due to rule 5. Who and for how long a catcher is signed will reveal a lot.
Fans would not like this but a 1 year signing means AA sees a lot in this kid. He also feels Langeliers will move quick to hedge his bet.
2 year signing and it’s a better player but not one we couldn’t move to a backup role if Contreras takes a step.
3 year signing and Contreras’ value is likely capitalized on and he’s traded. Langeliers can be brought along at a slower pace to try and maximize his bat.

Our other catcher is going to be bringing Corky Miller out of retirement.

Starting to feel slightly optimistic that the Braves will raise payroll, or should I be pessimistic and get ready to hear that the Braves will trade prospects? I'm seeing interviews where Alex is still adamant about resigning Donaldson, or another 3B ... not going with Riley and/or Camargo. That being said, I think he'll get it done, and we'll fill catcher with a lefty like Avila or Murphy. From there, he may trade for a rebound SP like Chris Archer. That leaves Riley, Waters, and Pache to start in AAA. That sets up very nicely, as I think the odds that at least ONE of them pans out is high, but we just don't know which one.

Moustakis is going to end up being our 3rd baseman. 80% chance
JD - 20%
We will get by there okay. JD is optimal but Moose isn't a terrible choice.
I'm most concerned with our catcher position which has neither defense or offense. I also have some concern about the outfield with Ender/Duvall/Markakis.
Catcher at least has some hope because we know we have a position to fill. In the outfield I think Snit thinks were cool with Ender/Duvall/Kakes. I'm much less sure.

As good of a player as Bryant is, no way in hell I'd give up even two of these guys for him. Bryant has two years left on his contract. Let the Faillies make that kind of mistake again.
2. Cubs trade Kris Bryant to Braves for Max Fried, Drew Waters, Bryse Wilson and William Contreras
The second franchise player on our list, Bryant -- like Betts -- will continue to be the subject of trade talks throughout the offseason. The Braves are said to be interested in bringing back Josh Donaldson, but if he signs elsewhere, Atlanta could move Austin Riley (who has yet to prove himself as a reliable big leaguer) back to third base from left field -- or they could deal for a player like Bryant, who can play either left or third.
Bryant isn’t slated to become a free agent for two more years, so while he should earn more than $40 million in his two remaining years of arbitration eligibility, the 2016 National League MVP Award winner would help the Braves in their quest to advance deep into October. Fried, who won 17 games at age 25, would give the Cubs a young cost-controlled starter to add to a veteran rotation led by Jon Lester, Yu Darvish, Jose Quintana and Kyle Hendricks.
The switch-hitting Waters (Atlanta’s No. 2 prospect, per MLB Pipeline) would give the Cubs a budding star in the outfield, while Wilson (their No. 6 prospect) profiles as a future mid-rotation starter or possibly a late-inning reliever. Contreras -- the younger brother of Chicago catcher Willson and Atlanta’s No. 8 prospect -- could give the Cubs a succession plan behind the plate if the elder Contreras is traded or leaves after the 2021 season as a free agent.
