And I can tell you very simply what the biggest variable by far when comparing RBI totals from one player to the next is how many chances did each guy get with runners on 2nd or 3rd or both? I'd love to see a stat that showed us the percentage of runs driven in in those situations rather than an actual RBI number--that would give us a much better idea of who is really good at "driving in runs" or not. Even then there are other variables in play, but this would give us a better rough idea than just looking at RBI totals. That's primitive. Did you ever see a 100-rbi guy that sucked? I mean, come on! The other stuff all evens out. Does a guy drive in runs, or does he not? You're complicating it where there's no need for overthinking. Guys get chances to drive in runs because they hit in a certain spot in the lineup, sure, but they hit in a certain spot in the lineup because they're trusted to drive in runs, too. Baseball ain't rocket science. Well, that's taking an over simplistic approach in my opinion.

I never said any guy with 100 RBI's sucked--I'm talking about how much value you can really place on the RBI stat compared to other players. I'll repeat that I didn't say the stat is useless, there's just better ways to evaluate an individuals offensive contribution.

Moving Acuna out of the leadoff spot is not a good idea. I totally agree. Although, do you how many of his HR's last year were solo shots? If I'm reading B-R right -19. 19 of 26 were solo HR's! That's A LOT of missed scoring opportunities that could be rectified if he's down a little bit in the order.

Go to www.mlbtraderumors.com pick a player and go to splits and you'll find more stats than you can digest along those situational lines I'm not sure it will be specific about runners on only third or only second or second and third versus runners on base....I haven't been able to find other stat places that are. And I'd really just like to see it listed so I didn't have to go do all the work. It would be a much better assessment than just "RBI's." it has all those specifics you seek

Moving Acuna out of the leadoff spot is not a good idea. I agree, at least not at this time. Maybe see how the season goes or in a year or two if the personnel are significantly different but at this time he is a spark at the leadoff spot and seem to come up in a lot of big situations late in the game from that spot also. I say leave well enough alone until the situation arises calling for a change.

I'll repeat that I didn't say the stat is useless, there's just better ways to evaluate an individuals offensive contribution. I understand that. My point is that situations tend to even out. Every big RBI guy has a game or two where he gets a bunch of RBIs in a blowout win (or loss). It's part of the game. The RBI is a very valuable stat, IMO, because scoring runs is what matters from the offensive side of the ball. Guys don't just luck into driving in 100-125 runs. They're getting hits (or making productive outs) when it matters most. It's mind-boggling to me that in this age of advanced stats, that people yawn when a guy strikes out 150 times, when striking out is the absolute least valuable thing an offensive player can do.

If it puts us up early that's a good thing and at least it's a meaningful HR, at least at the time it was hit. What is the team W/L percentage when he hits a leadoff solo homer? I'd bet they are pretty good. In my experience, about 1/3 to 1/2 of HR's occur when you're already winning by several runs or already losing by several runs and become meaningless in the final outcome anyways.

Nobody ever said a guy lucks out to drive in 100-125 RBI's, that's a complete red herring.
Nobody ever said scoring runs isn't what matters, there are just better ways to assess each individuals contribution to doing that.

If its true then I'm going to expect you to compile some numbers for every player in baseball and list them here so I can just browse those results.

I don't think it's simplistic at all to say that situations even out. It's OK to disagree, BTW

I just think that stats have been sliced and diced to death, not that it doesn't have its place, because it does. For me, the bottom line is if a guy can play, he can play. End of story.
