1 year 23 mil. I love this deal. It gives us power behind Freddie and it makes our use of Camargo flexible. He can play LF unless he needs to give an infielder a blow or we can trade him

He can play LF unless he needs to give an infielder a blow or we can trade him I doubt Johan will play OF. I'm guessing that either he or Dansby will be used as trade bait to help get us a frontline SP.

Donaldson is betting on himself to return to MVP form and cash in next offseason. I like it. He’ll be motivated.

I'm glad it's a one year deal... doesn't tie up money for a long time and as you said it gives him incentive to tru snd stay healthy and produce.

I'm glad it is just a one year deal... Helps bridge the gap to Riley and gives you more opportunity to see what we have there before having to depend on him.
That also allows us to explore some other options with Camargo... either internally or with trade.

I said in another tread that I wanted Donaldson at 1/22. This is essentially the same deal. 1/23 makes sense because that's exactly what he was paid last season. Like I said in the other tread, I think Donaldson is back and I like this signing a lot. As it stands given no other moves, I assume the Braves would slot Camargo in at LF with Acuna in RF. I said initially that a Donaldson signing would need to accompany a Camargo trade. I suggested trading Camargo and Ender for an OF upgrade. AA could very well see things differently or not have that option available to him.

I agree that Camargo would be a valuable trade piece and he's too good to be a bench player....but I would hate to lose him. I would only give Camargo and Ender for a top of the rotation arm.

I believe it's a terrible decision to pay a guy that much money, even for just one season, that has had injury issues the last two seasons. Especially last year. Getting ready to turn 33 and fought the health issues big time last year.

Short term contract on a middle of the order bat when healthy, who also plays above average defense.
Sounds like we learned from Uggla, Johnson, Upton, and so on... The ability to reassess next year and reallocate those funds will be a welcomed change IMO and apparently AA’s.

"When healthy."
$23M
I don't like the odds on that gamble.

Well Jose Bautista just had a beetle named after him so he could probably still scurry around and bug our opponents

I believe it's a terrible decision to pay a guy that much money, even for just one season, that has had injury issues the last two seasons. Especially last year. Getting ready to turn 33 and fought the health issues big time last year. When he finallly got healthy at the endof the year he started producing like people expected. I think this is a gamble, but actually a pretty good one. We need to bridge the gap as we further evaluate Riley... we can do something with Camargo to upgrade us elsewhere, and we did all this without giving up a single prospect. If the gamble fails, it's only a one year deal that we can absorb. If it pays off... its a homerun so to speak. Def a gamble, but sometimes you need to roll the dice and this is pretty low risk. We had a big need for RH power and we filled it if this works... and what were our other options? If it was via trade, we probably would have given up a prospect. Plus on a one year deal, JD will have a ton of incentive to produce.

What if we trade Camargo and Donaldson flops or gets hurt and Riley isn't ready this year, or Riley ends up not cutting it.
Then instead of three 3B we have zero.
I'm way more concerned about Donaldson staying healthy than I am about his production. If he's healthy then I do believe he'll produce. But him staying healthy is a pretty big if to me, and if we give up a very solid 3B in the process it's kind of doubling down on what would be a bad move if Donaldson ends up injured.
