I just want to know at what point did AA look at our bullpen and think to himself, "ah... we're good here". Yes, that is an excellent question.

To be completely fair (and trust me, there are a number of other relievers I felt like we should have signed) he did anticipate us having Winkler, O'Day and Minter to start the season. Our bullpen would look a lot better if it was ...

Out of curiosity, which other relievers do you think we should have signed? I thought Kelvin Herrera was a great option and not a ridiculous contract, but I think we also have to keep in mind we can't make guys sign with us. Maybe he didn't want to play for us, or maybe that was the case with other guys we might have pursued.

We could have had Zach Britton, Adam Warren, or Hunter Strickland too.

As good as he has been in the past, he had a few injury issues the last two seasons...he was still pretty good when he pitched, but 3 years $39M is too much for a reliever in my opinion. During the peak of his career I would have been ok with that. Familia would have been ok but maybe he wanted to stay with the Mets, don't know. I don't know anything about Warren, but I wouldn't have touched Strickland with a ten foot pole. He's a massive headcase and had trouble throwing strikes the last few years, that's the last thing we need!

Bud Norris released by Jays and available Thanks but I'll pass......another journeyman reliever with control issues.
I want pitchers who have never walked a batter in their entire career.
I'm sick of teh walkz!!!

Pretty sure that after his first stint here it came out he was a locker-room prima-donna who demanded special treatment and all sorts of crap that just didn't match up with his pedestrian production.

History has shown that you buy relievers off the FA market at your own peril. For every reliever that does a great job, there's a similar reliever who crapped the bed, so to speak. I, for one, am glad that AA didn't earmark salary for such a volatile venture.
Prayers go out to Bobby Cox.

I wish the best for Bobby Cox, thoughts and prayers go out - one of the real builders of what came to be
He stood for his men, that is part of the game that is missing with this instant replay now - the game might not have been as accurate but it was sure more entertaining watching the manager get in the umpire's grill
Bobby (to me) did not get enough credit for getting them to Five world series, that in of itself is an accomplishment

When we were discussing potential Outfield trades in the off season , i wondered why we werent in on a Milwaukee outfielder. Good matchup i think . They needed SP we needed an outfielder. So this past weekend i looked back at what it cost Mariners to get Santana. Than i ask myself how could we not be in on him? what Milwaukee got for him was a journeyman outfielder back and a prospect not close to the majors i think. Either way the Pitcher they got was nothing compared to any of the arms we could have given. So yeah i wonder now why we werent in on him?

I don't know, but we never really know what we tried or didn't try. We may have inquired and they may have given us an unreasonable reply even if the final deal they accepted. Maybe they just didn't want to help a team they may see in the NL post-season. Santana went to the AL, so it's a possibility. We often assume we didn't try things, but we never really know.
