Look, I could write a 2000 word explanation about the title, but I can break it down much simpler. Three years ago, the Braves organization made the commitment towards a rebuild. They took nearly every asset they had and they traded them for prospects. The brought in some of the best analysts and scouts to rebuild the farm. For 3 consecutive years the Braves drafted better than, arguably, any other team. As a result, the Braves have had the best farm system in the game, even after the promotions of Folty, Newk, Albies, Swanson, and Acuna.
When the year started, nobody envisioned the Braves would be a half game out of first at the all-star break. I can understand the belief that the Braves should strike while the iron is hot, but what the Braves have built is a system that could result in YEARS of contention. I would much rather see the Braves compete for the next 5 or 6 years than 1 or 2 years, by trading a bunch of their prospects for elite rental players, and with the news that the Braves didn't get Machado, it's clear that the Braves think the same way, and we should be happy about that.
I know some of you hated the rebuild and now that the Braves are winning you want them to go all the way, future be damned, but if the Braves take that route, in a few short years you'll be back to whining and complaining again because the Braves won't be competitive. All the rentals will be gone, all the prospects will be gone, and the Braves will have to try to compete with the free agent market being their only way to field a competitive team. That's not sustainable, especially for a mid-market team like the Braves.
The Braves made the right decision, no doubt about it.

The Dodgers gave up 5, count em 5 prospects. Sounds like a good trade for the Orioles.

Does anyone know where these prospects were ranked before they were traded to the Orioles?
4 of the 5 prospects make it on O's top 30
2 Yusniel Diaz-OF AA 220 AB, .905 OPS
13 Dean Kremer-SP A+-AA 86 IP, 3.03 ERA, 125 K
17 Rylan Bannon-3B A+ 336 AB .296/.402/.559, .961 OPS, 20 homeruns
29 Zach Pop-RP A-A+ 43.1 IP, 1.04 ERA, 47 K
NR Breyvic Valera-SB AAA 201 AB, .783 OPS
That's insane to give up for a 2-3 month rental. I hope this bites Magic in the ass.

I hope this bites Magic in the ass. Diaz was #Dodgers’ No. 4 prospect, according to @mlbpipeline. Bannon, a third baseman, was No. 27. Kremer, a right-handed pitcher, was No. 28. Pop is a right-hander in High A. Valera is a 26-year-old 2B who has seen time in majors this season. |

The Orioles weren't going to re-sign Machado in any event. I completely agree. I'm not sure I would give up the just #31 overall player for any rental. I read somewhere Diaz was the Dodgers #2 prospect.
But of course the Dodgers are in a a different boat than us, we need to cherish our prospects more. If they get thin they can just spend another eleventy billions dollars.

Bottom line is that the Dodgers can afford to do that because they are in that "all or nothing" window. We are not. This team, while young and talented, are not World Series ready - yet. Can we make the postseason? Sure. I think it would be a great step in the right direction to play in October this year, but not sacrificing the hopefully numerous times we will be able to play in October in the next few years to come.
The Braves have been and are continuing to be smart in the rebuild. No more knee-jerk reactions please. Go out and fortify the rotation with a guy like Eovaldi, get a couple of good young relievers like Barraclough or Kela and see what happens.
And no Moose please. The guys we have are good enough if utilized properly. Hopefully Snit will figure this out or be pressured to tinker with the lineup to maximize its potential.
Without a big splash, we should be playing meaningful baseball in September and after the last few years, that's all we could really ask for.

The Braves ain't winnin' the World Series this year, no matter what they do (as much as I'd like to think differently). I realize there is no perfect formula, but the thought of giving up Wright, Allard, or Touissant before really seeing what they can do doesn't work for me. Let's say we hang onto pretty much all of them for next season, and 2 of them emerge. We could have a young staff that is the envy of baseball. THAT is what I want. Established hitters are not nearly as volatile as pitchers, so I prefer to get hitters instead of pitchers via free agency.
