Nightman I could be off base. But here is some food for thought. In your rosterbations you have often had the Braves signing Kimbrel or another high priced reliever. As I've said before, I believe high priced relievers are more a luxury for the Braves than a necessity. I think we could see both Pollock and Kimbrel getting similar contracts this offseason or at least similar dollars per season. Just by nature of their job Pollock will be more valuable 95% of the time. The Braves need to be spending both their dollars and their trade chips wisely. That's also why I'm not interested in Moustakas. I'm not convinced he would be an upgrade over Camargo. If you told me a few months ago that I'd have typed that, I would have called you crazy.

Manny Machado is a need. Trade Bae and friends for Bum to appease the Nightman. Camargo/Riley at third. I want the walking injury known at AJ Pollock if he is indeed looking for a Kimbrel contract.
Trade Julio for a bag of dicks
I think the pen plays itself out with all our stock of pitching.

Bumgarner was hurt last year for roughly half the season and has made all of two starts this year. Unless things change, he's not the guy you should be holding out for. I wouldn't have said this a year ago. Given how both Inciarte and Markakis have played this season, I'd rather have Markakis if we have players capable of playing CF and we would in both Acuna and Pollock. I'd like to see how chronically injured Pollock performs over the rest of the season. He can give all-star and perhaps even beyond production as he showed briefly this season. However, it matters not what he is capable of if he can't stay on the field. Bumgarners injury was due to a freak accident, on a motorcycle, I believe. He has yet to get injured due to his pitching delivery.

[ In my most recent rosterbation, I had the Braves signing Cody Allen, who would cost less than Kimbrel for sure. They are a luxury, but at this point the Braves need at least one top flight reliever. As it stands right now Moose has a 114 wRC+, while Camargo’s is 109, that’s not a huge difference. It would make things a lot easier for the Braves if Camargo would hit a little bit better. I’m not a BA guy, but .224 isn’t great. I still think the odds of the Braves making a run for Moose and Herrera at the deadline is still above 50%.

The Giants aren’t trading MadBum, and even if they were, it’d make more sense for the Braves to wait a season and a half and just sign him over trading what would sure to be a huge haul of prospects. MadBum, to me, is a “break glass in case of emergency” type of signing, and what I mean by that is if by the end of next season, if it’s clear the Braves don’t have an ACE, then you aggressively try to sign MadBum. The window of contention has officially opened, if you’re the Braves you have to strike when the time comes. The end of next season is that time, IMO.

You simply can't trade for guys like Machado and Bumgarner if you're the Braves. The prospect cost is just too high, IMO. I really think you're better off paying $30 million to a guy than you are gutting your system. At least then you have the backup possibility of replacing the guy from within if he falls flat or suffers injuries. This is especially true given our international draft penalties.

My ideal offseason:
As I've said many times previously, my desire is for the Braves to play the starting pitchers they already have. For better or worse the pitchers will perform how they will.
Folty Newcomb Soroka Allard/Gohara/Fried for the last two spots although there will surely be others trying to take these spots in spring training. Teheran will be traded and McCarthy not offered a contract.
Catcher: As of right now you bring back both Suzuki and Flowers if they want to stay.
Shortstop: Albies. I would have Swanson train at a minimum at all the infield positions this winter and even the corner OF spots. Make him a utility player. I don't love what the shortstop market has to offer. Eduardo Escobar has never been an above average hitter in his career other than this year. This could be the start of something new for him. I'm just not going to pony up the money to be the one to find out.
Second base: The real get here would be Dozier. He's not having a good year and his BABIP is a little low. Dozier would be very expensive if he had a great year this year. From 2013-2017 Dozier had a minimum fWar of 2.9. In that time he totaled 21.7 WAR for an average of 4.3. Dozier at $20M or less/season would be a great signing. Other options include Lowrie, Kinsler, and Daniel Murphy if he can get healthy.
third base: In all likelihood Riley will play here, although if the Braves could work out something with Donaldson who should cost much less than was initially thought the Braves should do it. In this instance Riley could play LF for the duration of Donaldson's contract. This would likely only be a one year deal anyway.
OF: Trade Inciarte. Acuna to CF. Sign two of Pollock/McCutchen/Markakis/Puig. Honorable mention goes to Jon Jay, Adam Jones, Michael Brantley, and Leonys Martin.

While all the big teams are competing to sign Machado and Harper, skip that and sign Pollock and Brantley (front load both contracts), trade Inciarte and Teheran for prospects.
1. 2B - Albies 2. CF - Pollock 3. 1B - Freeman 4. RF - Acuna 5. LF - Brantley 6. Ca - Flowzuki 7. SS - Swanson 8. 3B - Riley

But Mr. Snitker, you can't bat Dansby in front of Riley. IF Dansby is our SS next year (yes I know, he probably will be.....no matter what....)

Well, we don’t actually know how Riley would perform, and you also have to take into account the ups and downs of a rookies first year. Obviously, if Riley rakes you swap positions, but each time I trot out these lineups it’s always the OD lineup, not the mid-year lineup.

But I can't believe you don't have Danny Santana in that lineup!

Sign Pollock and Dozier, trade for Schwarber. Something like that. Albies Pollock Freeman Dozier Schwarber Acuña Flowzuki Riley I forget the amount you said the Braves have to spend this offseason. Obviously you can't know for sure anyway. By revealing that publicly the Braves would be aiding other teams. The Braves do have significant funds available and should be spending them in order to improve. I don't believe the Braves can afford to carry both Inciarte and Swanson despite them both being plus defenders. Starting one might be acceptable. I might prefer neither.
I like Dozier a lot because unlike many of those outfielders I listed, he plays good defense. I worry that potentially his reduced power could be a constant. But he's been a good hitter other than this current down year and when he first came into the league. Looking at it a little more, I'm not itching to trade Inciarte to incorporate even one of my preferred four. Inciarte's BABIP this season is .042 below his career average. So if he is unlucky this season and not plain worse his wRC+ should be a little closer to league average. Inciarte's defense dipped big in 2015 and recovered in 2016. So there is reason to believe that his reduced production might not be the norm. Ender is still on his cheap contract extension and would not be as costly as any of the free agent outfielders. So I guess I've reconsidered on Inciarte. I still believe Dozier would be a great money sink provided the Braves believe Albies can play shortstop. And why wouldn't they? Albies was only moved because they saw Swanson as the better defender, not because Albies wasn't capable. I'm not as high on Brantley as you are. I can tell you aren't committed to the Braves obtaining him. Assuming his injury woes are behind him, he has to hit fairly well in order to justify playing him in the field. I'm still not under the impression that the Braves can afford to trade from their pitching depth. There will surely be a few busts/injuries. You have to make it to playoffs in order to win in the playoffs. Stacking the lineup full of hitters would accomplish that. If the Braves had comparable pitchers to the opposition 2-5 in the order (likely better at the bottom of the rotation), they would be favored due to their lineup. They'd also have a fighting chance against #1s as well. The Indians stacked their lineup and made the World Series several times in the 90s. Right now I'm imagining a lineup next year of Albies SS Switch Donaldson 3B R
Freeman 1B L
Dozier 2B R
Acuna RF R
Flowers/Suzuki C R/R
Inciarte CF L
Riley LF R
Donaldson and Dozier should both play good defense even if the offense isn't there. If both hit, that would easily be the best lineup in the NL. They'd cost $40M or less hopefully and would leave more money to spend on the bullpen.

If you gotta put Riley in LF, a position he's never played, to make your rosterbation work, then I would say you should go back to the drawing board. Here's a thought for the anti-Brantley crowd. Trade Inciarte, sign Pollock, re-sign Markakis to a two-year deal and reassess after the 2021 season. Not ideal, but Neck is really one of the best OFers, in terms of offense this year, and when looking at who to get, there aren't many OFers who have a track record of being really good for an extending length of time. Still don't think the Braves pull the plug on Swanson. So, I'm ruling out guys like Machado, Dozier, and the like.
