Justin Toscano -AJC Entering Thursday’s slate of games, the Braves’ 3.54 team ERA ranked second in the sport. Their starters’ 3.66 ERA was third – and that factors in everyone who has made a start for Atlanta this season. click-em.ajc.com/e/evib?_t=6619f69c571b463192296956df36722f&_m=5cdd693628774009a50c8e00f2054a49&_e=5JJ5LQJfNPqZhQxQTAXtd6fgOtUhMcXc4lC0Fw_CVuoqpsgMVpcpigS4HMptIRgqSince the introduction of the wild card in 1995, only 13 teams have missed the postseason with a team ERA of 3.54 or better. It hasn’t happened since 2014, when four teams (!) – the Mariners, Braves, Padres and Mets – all missed the playoffs with that criterion. The Mariners had a 3.17 ERA … and didn’t play in October. Since 1995, 21 teams didn’t make the postseason after their starters had combined to post an ERA of 3.66 or better. Most recently, the 2018 Mets rotation had a 3.54 ERA and missed the playoffs.

We harp on Murphy a lot, but we could complain about it day and night for the next 30 years and would never be overkill, in regards to what a boner that move was.
Contreras was 11th in MVP voting last year and will be there again if not higher this season. Fangraphs has him at 5.8 WAR last year and at 5.4 WAR right now for this season. For somewhere around $750,000 each season. We're paying Murphy $12M this year for 0.7 WAR.
What also sucks is that d'Arnaud is right at a .550 OPS for August and September combined. Snitwit would of course keep rotating them daily even if d'Arnaud had a .900 OPS for August and September, it just really sucks to have both catchers struggling.

I'll give Murphy another half year to get it together. He clearly wasn't this bad or the Braves would never have made that trade. He had a .755 OPS and 115 OPS+ in 4 years with the A's and a .738, 112 his last 2 full years there averaging 18 HR and 30 2B. Drake Baldwin, .298, .891 at Gwinnett, is waiting in the wings. Mid to late next year may be the time if Murphy continues to struggle. It's puzzling how bad he has become after a hot start in Atlanta.

Just to pour salt in the wound, Langeliers has hit 28 homers this year. It would have been a shame to have had those 2 young catchers on our roster.

A buddy of mine played with John Kruk and while he didn't score all that well, he knocked the sheet out if it. Smoltz can play, too....... when he's not busy talking. LMAO

LMAO I've played golf with one professional athlete in my life: Former Hawks player Jon Koncak. It was humiliating..... ... for him. He played a hole with my group at a celebrity golf tournament for charity. He heavily critiqued all 4 of our tee drives even though 3 out of us 4 had gone straight down the fairway with the 4th just off in the rough but still decent distance. Then he came up and chunked a huge divot about 10 feet while hitting a 110 yard drive into the woods. I laughed for 5 solid minutes while he drove off to meet up with the next group.

Only 5 teams in MLB, Phillies, Dodgers, Brewers, Padres, and Yankees have a better run differential than the Atlanta Braves.

Justin Toscano @justinctoscano · 3h I’ll have much more context in a story but I don’t pay for Twitter and the character limit capped me Quote
Justin Toscano @justinctoscano · 3h The Braves, aware of all the variables for this weekend, are using a day-to-day approach, with an eye toward the results of the Mets and Diamondbacks. They know they need to get into the postseason first, so all hands will be on deck with the pitching staff.
