Does anyone know the current status of Chris Archer or Anibal Sanchez. Last I heard they were unsigned free agents. At this point I'd take any veteran than can pitch 5-6 innings and give up 3 runs.

Bro, 6 innings/ 3 runs is a quality start, if there were vets that could do that regularly they wouldn't be unsigned.
Trying to find one or two guys like that isn't going to be easy or cheap. We'll likely have to sign several guys at different points and pray they manage to magically find lightning in a bottle.
I don't know how feasible it is to get Bauer to break his contract, may be no way on that one, plus it would require Snitker to swallow his smug pride so it probably wouldn't be attempted even if possible.

I was thinking more 5 IP. In 2022 Chris Archer pitched to a 4.56 ERA in 102 IP and Sanchez to a 4.28 ERA in 69 IP. I'm not asking for 7-8 innings, just 4-5 innings to keep us in the game and not tax the bullpen. Sanchez averaged 88 pitches, 60% strikes, and 5 innings while Archer averaged 71 pitches, 61% strikes, and 4 IP (looks like he was used as an opener for 3-5 innings). Both should come very cheap. Maybe one or both can pitch well enough to help get us through and maybe even surprise us a couple of times. They certainly shouldn't do worse than Odorizzi I hope and maybe even simulate a 2021 Smyly, who by the way has pitched very well for the Cubs after that big Braves contract. Otherwise, we are looking a overused and abused bullpen. I doubt the Bauer thing comes to fruition and our only other options seem to be pitchers that are getting battered at AAA. Maybe they could find it in the bigs like Elder did, who knows.

I think they feel the 5 inning just keep it close type guys are already here as internal options. They just don't want to rush it and hope either Shuster or Dodd can get hot at Gwinnett first. That, and they think Soroka is going to be a long term call up thay isn't far away, but he's still working on some things.

Perhaps that will work but I wouldn't mind bringing in one veteran pitcher at low cost.

In the interim until that time comes, Shuster will be the most likely candidate to get those starts. They are paying extra attention to walk rates between him and Dodd, and he's pitched better overall in Gwinnett than Dodd has .

He's just trying to get them to release him so he can come pitch for us.

I've always been very leery of advanced defensive metrics. I've sensed our defense not being pristine, but overall I don't have any problems with any of our starters defensively.
