A part of me kind of feels like we won the draft forever the day we passed on ol' Van Poppel. He was the consensus #1 pick and a lot of people thought we were crazy for not only passing on him, but also for taking the guy we did take instead.
I used to call Snitker "Bobby Cox Jr." in the beginning because the strength for both of them was the cheerleading aspect. But it didn't take long to realize there were a LOT of differences between the two, and one of them was that Bobby knew not only how to recognize who LOOKED like one of them baseball player guys but he knew which ones really were top notch baseball player guys.

Success and failure in this game is such a fine line that there's no way to predict what a young guy will be in 5 years. The mental aspect of baseball is much greater than it is in football or basketball, largely because it's an individual game, meaning no one is there to cover for your mistakes.

Idk about that, Cox crowned heyward in spring training 2010.

Yeah, every year it’s some “Cant miss” guy that misses big. Mark Appel, and Brady Aiken among others.

Ryan Cusick, RHP from Wake Forest, big kid 6'6" sporting a mohawk. Has topped out at 102 mph. With the 24th pick in the 1st round of the MLB draft, the Braves select: Braves select Wake Baseball right-hander Ryan Cusick, No. 26 on the Top 250 Draft Prospects list. Does he have any idea where his pitches are headed? I hope he's a "pitcher" and not a "thrower"...we've seen too many of them. People get so excited about guys that can throw 100+ but most of them can never find the plate.

The initial analysis I saw was that for him to ever be a starter, he would have to seriously work on his control.... I instantly rolled my eyes and said "oh boy... here we go".

Due to circumstances beyond anyone's control, it would not be so panicky if he was needed so quickly. Add the struggles of Pache and that he and Pache are prospects coming up at the same time there is trepidation in some of the fan base myself included Not fair, but panic is how it goes when things are not going well He may very well develop but as for being rushed, its the right thing not to rush him I do not know if the braintrust is doing a good job developing guys to be their best. This is on the powers that be not the kids But again, look back at previous drafts and tell me how many first round picks you even recognize. Whatever the problem(s) are, draft evaluation, player development, very few of these kids ever even make it in the big leagues for all teams. And it is common to see guys taken way later in the drafts who do make it. Been a minute but I figured I would pop in… I have to disagree. A large number of the major leaguers come from the first round. Grouping a bunch of the late rounds together isn’t a fair comparison because it’s such a large pool of players and picks. In reality it’s a needle in a haystack unless targeting a high schooler who needs a large signing bonus to forgo school. Shoot many slip due to the asking price on a bonus even if they went to college. I do understand what you are saying and to your point I think it’s so much harder in baseball that tiers of prospects are much larger than other sports. Which making a draft pool stretching strategy viable.

Gawlee, that's all we need is another one of The Walker Boys with a tore up elbow or shoulder.

Idk about that, Cox crowned heyward in spring training 2010. Heyward did look like he would be the man in 2010 and had another real good yr at the plate in 2012, remember he did hit 27 HRS in '12 Looked like he was on his way to being a 30/30 man but at the plate it never worked that was again - just never hit for the HR power he looked to have The best move by Cox was the Doyle Alexander for John Smoltz move - Alexander did have something left in Detroit but Cox and Mazzone worked wonders with Smoltz after he was not really coached up in Detroit. That was a time we did develop pitchers.

i do not get deep into the mlb draft as i do with other sports but what are reasons why teams can not trade picks either before or during the draft or at the trade deadline seems it would be a bit more exciting
