I just read a discussion on another forum where a guy is claiming that Smoltz is the only pitcher in the HOF who had Tommy John surgery.
Interesting if true.

Per breaking news line on ESPN, I see that Noah Syndergard is set to have TJ surgery Another talented arm having this at a pretty young age In the end is it too much travel ball played before these kids even get to the pro ranks? Or in the end is it just that we can diagnose injuries so much better this day in time and we have better procedures to fix guys I am sure guys had injuries back in the day and no one could diagnose it - guys just fell off and the old adage was his arm went dead Got to wish Thor well even if he is one of the division rivals Imagine Sandy Koufax and Don Drysdale with today's sports medicine. Drysdale was fairly young when his arm went dead in the 1969 season, in 1968 he pitched that long scoreless streak and had a 2.15 ERA. Drysdale has been sort of a forgotten name of All time greats. He also was a tough luck pitcher should have had 4 or 5 20 Win yrs Mets season being derailed again by injury before it even starts.

I've always thought Tommy John should be in. Between the surgery named after him and being a really good pitcher, why not? Hell, the guy won 288 games. I've never understood it. Dude was a pioneer. tht.fangraphs.com/tommy-john-should-be-in-the-hall-of-fame/

288 wins are great, but he played for what... 26 years?

I wonder if the Mutts knew something was amiss when they were shopping Noah last year. Remember it was odd because they were also adding players like they were making a legit run.

288 wins are great, but he played for what... 26 years? The way I look at it, which is what I agree with in the article, is that his numbers may not quite be hall-worthy, but they're close, and when you consider the surgery Dr. Jobe pioneered with John as the guinea pig, he should be in.

I think he’s been a curse to the game. If he had never come along then all these poor guys wouldn’t be having the Tommy John surgery! 🤪

Had he been a bigger strikeout pitcher he might already be in - look at Blyleven with a similar W-L with alot of shutouts (and I do not take that away from him at all) He had a pretty good career ERA 3.34 and he did pitch on some of those light hitting White Sox teams from 1965 to 71. He had some of his good WAR yrs pitching for some of those teams He did have a pretty dominant stretch from 1977 to 81 with the Dodgers and NYY, he has a low WAR yr with LAD in 1978 in spite of 17-10 and 3.30 with LAD that yr - 3 20 win seasons too Big picture I would vote him on based on the impact on the game and that he was very very good. And durable too, he was quite good in 87 at age 44 in his later career with the Yankees

Best post season pitcher ever in my book Imagine had he been healthier, would have been close to 300, look at the yrs he was the closer, that cost at least 50-75 wins Best trade ever made in Braves history includes the pre ATL days
