UP NEXT:
Cubs: RHP Tyler Chatwood (3-3, 3.35) will face the Braves on Wednesday night looking for his fourth straight win after beginning the season 0-3.
Braves: RHP Brandon McCarthy (4-2, 5.58) hopes to bounce back from two straight miserable outings. After starting the season with four straight wins, McCarthy has surrendered 23 hits, 14 earned runs and three homers in his last 8 1/3 innings.
HOME BLUES:
The Braves began a stretch where 26 of 40 games will be at home.
That may not be a good thing.
Atlanta is just 8-8 at SunTrust Park, including four straight losses, compared to 17-8 on the road.
TRAINER'S ROOM:
Cubs: With Darvish coming off the DL, OF Mark Zagunis was optioned to Triple-A Iowa
Braves: SS Dansby Swanson (left wrist) appears close to coming off the DL. He took batting practice Tuesday and could rejoin the Braves for a weekend series against the Miami Marlins.

A relatively quiet day in Braves history.....at least from what I could find....
2004 Ben Sheets becomes the 14th pitcher in baseball history to strike out 18 batters in a nine-inning game en route to a complete-game three hitter, beating the Braves, 4-1. The 26 year-old right-hander whiffs eight of the final 11 hitters he faces to break the team record of 14 established by Moose Haas in 1978.
But a few items of interest around the league from this date...pitching firsts to tragic firsts....
1965 Future Hall of Famer Jim Palmer, pitching 3.2 innings in relief, wins his first major league game when the Orioles defeat the Yankees at Memorial Stadium, 7-5. The 19 year-old Orioles' rookie right-hander makes the day more memorable when he hits a two-run homer off Jim Bouton in the fourth inning.
1970 During a game against the Giants at Dodger Stadium, Alan Fish, sitting with friends from the Poinsettia Playground in the second row seats along the first base line, is struck in the head by a foul ball off the bat of Manny Mota. The 14 year-old boy will die four days later to become the first fatality as a result of a batted ball in major league history.

Chip Caray Retweeted Dale Murphy Only problem? Both bad calls last nite happened in 5th, and both were wrong. If goal is to “get all calls right”, why the heck do we limit challenges? That compounded the frustration and made questionable process worse IMO.Chip Caray added, Dale Murphy
@dalemurphy3 Replay is like the DH... we’re not going to be able to get rid of it, so we got to fix it. We’ve lived with missed calls for all these years-so let’s go innings 1-7, no challenges. Innings 8,9 one challenge. Extra innings? Has to go at least 13-then 1 challenge 25 replies 8 retweets 76 likes

Until umps stop protecting umps, it simply will not work.

That could help the decision making to be objective.

LOL, I just criticized my own post, ohh well

Let’s stop crying about the umps. Braves had the lead VIZ blew it, Snit sat and allowed it, even after it was seen Viz had no slider. Folty should close, my opinion.

Uhh, that's gonna leave a pretty big hole in the rotation. FWIW, I'm not crying about the umps, but that doesn't change the fact that they cost us a game last night in spite of what happened in the 9th, nor does it change the fact that it is a useless waste of time. Ironic that baseball is wasting time on replay when the mantra is otherwise to speed the game up.

If the umpire says he touched the plate but the tag occurred BEFORE he touched the plate the replay should be used to confirm this so they can't come back and say the tag was late but we don't know if he touched the plate. It's much easier for an umpire a few feet away so see if the plate was touched than trying to determine it by a video replay. (see the replay problems tread)

As the pen is currently constructed, I would give Winkler a shot at closing. He's been the best reliever, by far. I still like Minter, but he needs to do what my son's travel ball coach used to always say - "get ahead, stay ahead". Carle seems to be an effective bridge guy and I can see Gohara moving up the bullpen chain from LR to SU. Viz needs to be in low pressure situations if he's going to be used at all.

If the Braves had the runs denied by replay Viz would have got the save, even with giving up the two runs.

As frustrating as last night's loss was, I'm hoping that it at least opened the possibility that Snit may start going with the hot hand in the 9th. He mentioned in the postgame interview that he may give Wink a look.
To keep running Viz out there is simply not an option anymore, especially now that we seem to be finally bearing the fruits of the rebuild.

Folty got two big time strike 3 calls that were balls in men in scoring position situations. Y’all ain’t gonna mention that though.?

They almost sold high on Viz a few years back but he blew up before they got the chance.
