Would Braves consider Walker Buehler? Not sure if LAD will bring him back.

Pitching is so volatile. It's hard to know who to sign. Catchers, on the other hand, it's easy to know who to sign.......... except for the Braves. Catchers are really hard for the Braves.

Pitching is a total crapshoot. Red Sox fans were thrilled to death to see Sale moved before this season. Then he has the year he had for us (although he totally failed us in the playoffs).
But because it's such a crapshoot, that's exactly why you can't go into a season with just 5 options for starters when two of them are huge health question marks. Especially when you have literally zero other starting pitchers who are legit major league pitchers. Even if one of two of your possible pool of starters are #5's or worse, they still have to be better than what we went into 2024 with (once you looked beyond our top 5). Imagine what a disaster it would have been if Schwellenbach hadn't stepped up the way he did, that was pure luck and a major break.

In terms of the Eovaldi rumor, I think Verlander, Buehler, or Scherzer are more AA type moves. Veteran pitchers that will cost a decent amount, but won’t require long contracts. I think Eovaldi will get 4 years, and more than $22m per year

I would take a chance on him, but we’re probably more likely to sign Julio Teheran. Or maybe pull Pete Moylan out of retirement and try to convert him into a starter. IMO if you’re willing to let Fried go you need to spend the money you would have offered on two good mid to back end reliable starters.

Here's where I'd like to see AA go.
Trade with White Sox:
- Jarred Kelenic - Dylan Dodd - Owen Murphy or JR Ritchie
for
- Luis Robert Jr. - Nicky Lopez
Gives up on the Kelenic experiment for an even more explosive, high potential impact bat. Gives us another elite glove SS to platoon with Arcia in 2025, which lets Nacho continue to harness his skills in AAA for another year.
Sign Shane Bieber (1x$12M) and Charlie Morton (1x$10M).
Bieber won't be ready at opening day, but he'll come back April/May like Strider. This gives us incredible depth at SP, and doesn't lock us down indefinitely, so there's room for AJSS, Waldrep, and others to grow into roles. Anderson is out of options, so here's opening day rotation:
1 L Sale 2 R Lopez 3 R Schwellenbach 4 R Morton 5 R Anderson
By May, you'd see Strider and Bieber move into the rotation, and you'd either see Morton and Anderson transition to bullpen, or we'll inevitably see someone else go down with injury.
I think you could look at the bullpen and bench, but I view those as smaller moves. I think this is the big lift that gives us explosive offense at every position but shortstop, where we would at least have elite defense. It gives us incredible depth in the rotation, and it stacks the deck to have an elite team in the 2nd half. Team after ASB:
1. R Strider 2. L Sale 3. R Lopez 4. R Schwellenbach 5. R Bieber
1. R Iglesias 2. L Lee 3. R Johnson 4. L Bummer 5. R Holmes 6. L Perdomo 7. R Morton 8. R Anderson
1. CF L Harris Jr. 2. RF R Acuna Jr. 3. 3B R Riley 4. 1B L Olson 5. DH R Ozuna 6. LF R Robert Jr. 7. 2B S Albies 8. C S Murphy / Baldwin 9. SS S Lopez / Arcia
Yes, I would bat Acuna 2nd. I'd want him to focus less on stealing, and more on driving the ball like only he can. Better to start doing that with more men on base.

Acuña is not an ideal second hitter. His job would be to protect the on-base leadoff guy and make contact. Not sure he has the discipline to do that. The old adage is that your 3rd batter is your best hitter... He would be better suited for 3rd, not 2nd.

Acuña moving to 2nd would require Acuña wanting to go to 2nd.
I would be concerned about exactly when Bieber might be ready to return. Some concerns hoping you can get TWO guys back and ready to contribute.

The old adage is that your 3rd batter is your best hitter... He would be better suited for 3rd, not 2nd. I think that's been fairly debunked at this point. The best hitters, including power hitters, generally hit first or second now. Look no further than Ohtani and Soto. Trout was hitting second when he was still the best in baseball. It's the position that maximizes number-of-plate-appearances with opportunities to bat with men on. It's generally where you want your top run producing bat, even better if he has some speed.

Some concerns hoping you can get TWO guys back and ready to contribute. Correct, it's fruitless if he's not open to it. But he hit 2nd / 3rd all through the minors, and he personally said just the other week that he doesn't think swiping 40-50-60 bags is really his goal anymore. So embrace that philosophy shift, and put him #2, where modern analytics says your best hitter should go. That keeps Harris batting ahead of him, so Michael should get lots of pitches to hit to avoid being walked on front of Acuna. That's great for Harris, as he has generally poor plate discipline. That's largely why Harris thrived batting ninth ahead of Acuna, but struggled when he moved to 6th/7th at the beginning of 2024. When it's Arcia behind you, you'll get a lot more breaking balls off the plate, which Harris can't help but chase. It's no coincidence that when Michael came back from his hamstring injury and was placed leadoff ahead of our best hitters again, he took off. He's a guy that needs to bat with producers behind him, as he mashes when he gets pitches to hit, but struggles when pitchers draw him out of the strike zone.

Some concerns hoping you can get TWO guys back and ready to contribute. I actually think that's the beauty of it, you don't really need them both back. For $22M you're diversifying your risk. You'll notice that post-ASB roster I listed doesn't have Daysbel Hernandez listed, who I absolutely think should be on our team somehow. This is more about spreading the chips out to give us 10 legit starting pitchers, and then over the course of the year we'd find the best 5, ID who that swingman is when we have a long stretch with no off-day and want a 6th man, and then be postured to address inevitable injury without having to go to unreliable guys who aren't ready. Think of this depth: 1. R Strider (open on IL) 2. L Sale 3. R Lopez 4. R Schwellenbach 5. R Bieber (open on IL) 6. R Morton 7. R Anderson (out of MiLB options) 8. R Holmes 9. R AJSS (has MiLB options) 10. R Elder (has MiLB options) 11. R Waldrep (has MiLB options) I think that's a better way to go than throwing $28M/6 at Fried, and then having him eventually go down when one of these forearm strains turns into TJ.

Fried will likely go down sooner than later. He's a bean pole who's already had TJ. Love the kid, but I don't see the Braves keeping him.

David O'Brien@DOBrienATL · 5m Charlie Morton, who's 41 today, is considering pitching in 2025. Based on past discussions & importance of being home in Bradenton w/ wife & 4 kids, I'd guess teams that train w/in commuting distance (#Braves, O's, Pirates, Rays) are appealing. He's pitched for all those but O'
