UP NEXT
Braves: RHP Julio Teheran (0-1, 7.07 ERA) looks for his first win after allowing 11 runs on 15 hits in 14 innings in three starts this season.
Cubs: RHP Tyler Chatwood (0-2, 4.91) allowed five runs in five innings in his last start during Chicago's home opener on Tuesday.
TRAINER'S ROOM
Braves: CF Ender Inciarte wasn't in the starting lineup because manager Brian Snitker wanted to give him a day off.
Cubs: CF Albert Almora Jr. was back in the lineup after missing Friday's game with an illness. He homered before being lifted after five innings.
WEATHER CONCERNS
There were errant throws because of the cold, wet baseball, but the major concern of playing in weather like on Saturday is injuries.
"Baseball is not necessarily designed for this," Maddon said. "I don't know to what extent in the future, maybe, they can talk about when even if it's not actually physically snowing or raining, there might be elements that are not conducive to playing a legitimate game of baseball."

Today's game was not a "legitimate game of baseball" in many ways.

Saturday's game was horrendous and will go down in Cubs' lore as the great comeback. The Braves bullpen is atrocious. Ramirez especially BLOWS.

That came was market correction.
It was the same thing as when the housing market collapsed in 2008.
Our pen had been nothing more than smoke and mirrors all season. They have been walking people left and right all season but somehow wiggling their way out of it. So just like when things have been going great but the banks have been leading money to people who shouldn’t be lent money.... just like when the stock market is inflated and over-valued due to junk bonds; there comes a crash when those markets adjust down to where they realistically should have been all along.
That’s what happened yeaterday with our bullpen. The inability to throw strikes all season came home to roost in one huge crash. We were paid back for every time all season these bozos like Ramirez have come in and walked a batter but we somehow escaped.
Reievers must throw strikes and not walk batters. We’ve got several who just can’t. We lead the league in walks by the bullpen BEFORE yesterday’s debacle.
Market correction has occurred.

I think the major problem is MLB starters are wimps and babied. Every 5 days? 5+ innings is considered good? They're wimps. Yesterday's starters went 7 innings+ and pitched every 4th day. It's those big contracts that makes a player want to "stretch" their less than stellar careers. This puts stress on the relievers today, who are never adaquately rested.

Is it the pamyers fault, or the managers/teams.
Seems to me that most of the time pitchers don’t want to come out of games. I’ve been saying for 4 years now that the reason our pitchers throw 100 pitches in 5 innings is because they are coached and taught to nibble instead of pitching to contact and trusting their stuff. Look at what Classless Dick is doing in Philly.. the reason why he pulled his top starter when he was cruising is that the stats prove the third time through the lineup is when things go south.
I think you’re right about pens being overused, but I think it is more on the coaches and teams than it is on the starters. Their bodies are being trained to go max effort for 90 pitches and to nibble the entire time so those pitch totals are reached by the end of the 5th.
But then again.... the Braves have a lot of relievers who can’t consistently throw a strike to save their lives... even when rested.

Rain around the Chicago area is diminishing in coverage and intensity as it approaches the area. Looks like it will mostly end by 2 PM with just drizzle and intermittent very light showers afterwards and temps in the upper 30's. We need to get back out there today and put yesterday's game in the rear view mirror. I saw some of the game early and surely thought with a 9-1 lead it was in the bag. GO BRAVES!

Anyone one know WHY the game is rained out. The rain has passed through and no echoes are showing on radar meaning at the very most very light rain or drizzle. Did someone forget to put a tarp on? Is the outfield a lake? Is this just one one those, after yesterday, it's just it's too cold and damp to do that again days? I'm miffed. Chicago Radar
