I've been wary all Spring that his success was smoke-and-mirrors. His last ST outing, and the first 2 starts, he's been rocked. In past years, his fastballs velocity had dropped, but he would still have 93-95 if he wanted it. This year, it seems like he's regularly at 88-89, and can only get to 90-92 when he reaches back.
Is this the end? I see Jair Jurrjens flashing before my eyes ... straight fastball that had lost its velocity ... loopy slider ... uninspiring changeup. I'm not sure he'll make it through the season, but I believe we're on the hook for 2019 with a club option for 2020, so they may keep him in ATL no matter how badly he struggles.

Yeah it's worrisome, but his stock fell of dramatically last year, so to me it's just go with the flow. I have yet to watch a full game this year or even seen him pitch to give my opinion on him, but the drop in velocity isn't helping my optimism.

I am with you on this. He has always worried me even when getting good results. It always seemed he was on the verge of losing it, and a lot of innings he had to really work to get through. Then came last years home derailment and even having much better success on the road it still seemed he really ducked and dodged his way through a lot of baserunners and not a lot of swings and misses.
It’s really odd... At one point getting top half of the rotation results for a few years and then what we see now, but it has been a fairly steady decline.
On top of the physical things with velocity, it has now also gotten in his head in a bad way.

I hope not. He needs to be scheduled to pitch away games only for a shot to regain enough value to trade.

I started suggesting last year that the rotation be juggled every time for that very reason. it’s to the point that a random call up spot starter is a better option.

I think at this point, it's best to see what we can get for him and just do it. He hasn't helped the team in a LONG time now (although this has most likely already been done more than once with less-than-satisfactory results).

I want to see a couple more home starts for him since it's so early, but my optimism is way down after that first start.
Should have traded him in the summer of 2016 but that was so hard to do with him being only 25 at that time and on a good contract for us.

Should have traded Teheran and kept Simmons.

He looks like he is pitching up hill

The reason can be aliens stole his precious bodily fluids for all it matters.
It’s either fixable or it isn’t and I have lost faith on it being fixable.

JT is fine with his contract. The problem he has is he doesn’t have a competent pitching coach to tell him to scrap his poor 4 seamer and rely on his 2 seamer and improved slider. His slider has one of the best spin rates and can be a plus pitch. He has to throw his two seamer harder. 90ish to be successful. With his contract. A 3/4 type pitcher with 180 innings is a steal. But we don’t have a competent pitching coach.

I used to value those innings he always ate up a lot more than I do now.
Now when I realize that approximately half of those innings are at home when he leaves in the fifth inning with us down by 5, 6, or seven runs, it doesn’t mean so much to me anymore.

But he doesn’t have to be. Look as his advance stats this year and last. His four seamer is getting killed and that is his pitch he throws the most. Why wouldn’t a pitching coach sit down with him and go over changes. Oh I know. We have a shitty pitching coach who picks his ass and dreams about his career that fizzled in double A.

I don’t disagree, but you think at this level, there wouldn’t be that level of incompetence. Coppy and AA both being stats guys... you think would call ole Chuck into the office and have a fireside chat with him.

I never thought I would want someone gone more than when frediot was here.
