David O'Brien @dobrienatl Means they didn't want to start season with him in a backup role playing once or twice a week. (Also, I would not be surprised if Contreras is traded this winter.)
Holdeñ Galatas @galatas_H Replying to @dobrienatl What do you think this means for Langeliers? I know it probably won’t mean much, but I’m just curious

David O'Brien @dobrienatl Manny Pina signing assures #Braves will not be in a position like last season, when they lost Travis d'Arnaud to thumb injury at beginning of May and were without an experienced backup. D'Arnaud is signed through 2023 as well.

yeah as good as he's looked, 1 more year of development won't hurt. Of course if he tears it up in AAA, and then forces the Braves hand, that would be a good "problem" to have. In the meantime I think Piña is a lot better defensively than d'arnaud-- literally cannot remember the last base runner he threw out.

Langeliers is getting ready to turn 24 in a few days, we shouldn't be babying him.
On the bright side Pina is a good defensive catcher and can throw runners out, that will be new to us.
It does make me wonder if we're considering moving Contreras, he's definitely looking like the odd man out.
d'Arnaud has had 58 SB attempts against him and thrown out 8 in the last two years with us.

Just glanced at the leaders in GIDP last year, I can't believe some of the names.
Juan Soto 2nd with 23. Trea Turner with 18 and he's one of the fastest runners in the game.

David O'Brien @dobrienatl No, it's more to do with Contreras being a Gold Glove-caliber defender from the moment he arrives, with a lot of raw power as well. I think Contreras has good trade value now, but I haven't been told by anyone he'll be traded. Just my opinion. Can't play both enough at Triple A.
Jasoñ @cjason13 Replying to @dobrienatl Why the thought on Contreras? Work ethic?

Dylan Short @dylanxshort Just prepare to see this news all offseason. Alex is going to let Freddie see what he's worth on the open market, then swoop in with a comparable deal.
Jon Heyman @jonheyman Yankees met with reps for all top lefthanded-hitting 1B, including Freddie Freeman. Of course the Braves would seem most likely to retain Freeman, while Rizzo and perhaps trade candidate Olson, among others, may be more realistic for NYY. But it’s worth investigating the great FF

Never heard of Manny Pina but I looked up his numbers and if he keeps up being a good defensive catcher with the OPS+ around 90 you can do worse.
13 HRS last yr, .189 BA with low OPB but no one really cares about BA anyway anymore. Not bad numbers in his career for a semi regular
As has been said, its insurance. Guess we can count on Langaliers for 2023 maybe a cup of coffee next yr
Guess no reunion of the Fabulous Leon again

In 82 games in 2021, Ronald Acuña Jr hit into 0 (zero) double plays. Just do not rush him back and I am sure they won't. He helps in so many ways but he will have to play a bit more careful in the future. We had a few scares with him before this injury I am 100 percent he will put his heart into getting right
