Aside from 3 games, this offense looks like crap. We are really good at striking out Having Nick in the lineup in place of Matt Adams MIGHT keep us from setting a record for K's per game.

Surging Twins place Josh Donaldson on 10-day injured list with calf injury - CBSSports.com Friday night, the Twins announced that third baseman Josh Donaldson had been placed on the 10-day injured list, retroactive to August 4, with a right calf strain. He injured the calf on July 31 and apparently hasn't recovered well enough to avoid a stint on the injured list. This is the third time in the last three seasons Donaldson has hit the IL with a calf injury. There's no word as to the severity of Donaldson's injury or if he'll be back after the minimum 10 days. Obviously with only a 60-game season, 10 games is a pretty large chunk of the season. Donaldson, 34, has hit .182/.296/.318 with a homer and two RBI in just seven games this season. Entering Friday, the Twins are 5-2 with Donaldson and 5-1 without him, but in the long run they're obviously better with a healthy Donaldson in the lineup every day. He's not the MVP-caliber player he once was, but he's still very good. Last year in Atlanta he hit .259/.379/.521, which was good for a 127 OPS+, with 37 homers and 94 RBI. Without Donaldson at third, the Twins have been using Marwin Gonzalez and Ehire Adrianza at the hot corner. The Twins started play Friday night sitting at 10-3, good for a 2 1/2-game lead in the American League Central and tied with the Cubs for the best record in baseball among teams that haven't had their schedules altered. The Marlins, at 6-1, technically hold the best winning percentage. www.cbssports.com/mlb/news/surging-twins-place-josh-donaldson-on-10-day-injured-list-with-calf-injury/

New faces expected as Braves, Phillies play two
The Philadelphia Phillies will be looking to continue their positive momentum when they host the Atlanta Braves in a doubleheader on Sunday. The Phillies won their second in a row Saturday thanks to an impressive 5-0 victory on Saturday as Jake Arrieta and three relievers combined for a four-hit shutout. Philadelphia is expected to hand the ball to right-hander Vince Velasquez (0-0, 12.00 ERA) in the first game with Spencer Howard set to make his major league debut in the second game. Manager Joe Girardi wouldn't immediately confirm the order of starters for the doubleheader. Velasquez hasn't started since July 26, when he allowed four runs in three innings against the Miami Marlins. Velasquez is 1-6 with a 5.20 ERA in 12 career games (11 starts) against the Braves. "For Vince, it's really important that he bounces back, he goes back to work and he gets his stuff right," Girardi said. "It's important he has a good start in his next start." Howard, meanwhile, is one of the most highly touted prospects in the organization. And it was inevitable that Howard would earn a start at some point this season. "I think there's a number of different ways that we could use him, whether it's starting or relieving," Girardi said. However Howard is utilized, his teammates have been anxiously awaiting this opportunity. "His stuff is electric," said second baseman Scott Kingery. "I've faced him a couple of times. It didn't turn out well for me. He's got good stuff. He's someone that can help the team. If that's what happens, I think we're all going to be excited for it." The Braves, who scuffled offensively on Saturday, will be looking for a strong start from left-hander Max Fried in one game. The other game is expected to be a bullpen start and it could go to right-hander Huascar Ynoa. It would be the first career start and third career appearance for the 22-year old. Left-hander Will Smith, who has recovered from COVID-19, is expected to be available in the Braves' bullpen. "I'm definitely ready to get in there, get the season rolling, get the first one under my belt," Smith said. Atlanta hadn't officially confirmed which game Fried will start. Fried has been impressive, going 2-0 with a 2.04 ERA in three starts, a span of 17 2/3 innings. Over Fried's career, he holds a 1-2 mark and a 5.47 ERA against the Phillies in nine career appearances (three starts). "The thing I've struggled with the most (in my career) is wanting to do more and not feeling like my best is enough and wanting to do extra," Fried said. "For me, it's about staying within myself." In Saturday's loss, Ronald Acuna Jr., Dansby Swanson, Marcell Ozuna and Freddie Freeman combined to go 0 for 15. Freeman went 0 for 4 and had his average drop to .200. But Freeman and the rest of the Braves lineup remains one of the most dangerous in the major leagues. Freeman missed some time as he also recovered from COVID-19. "I still have some indecision at the plate," Freeman said. "I'm taking some fastballs that I normally don't take. I'm working hard, working every day." www.cbssports.com/mlb/news/surging-twins-place-josh-donaldson-on-10-day-injured-list-with-calf-injury/

Man, we could really use Donaldson's big bat right now. Oh wait, he can't swing from the DL. Although, I guess a cardboard cutout of him at the plate still might be better than Riley. smh

Probably 3 good years left and now one is almost down the drain where he's not going to provide all that much. They're likely to get only two good years AND that's if he stays healthy. It appear we caught a huge break in that regard last year.

Alex Carr @alexcarrmlb Braves pitcher, Huascar Ynoa, is making his third ever Major League appearance today in game one.
I’d imagine Joe Girardi configured this lineup to throw as many lefties at him as possible.
4 pure lefties, 3 switch hitters.
In this matchup, I really like the lineup.

I would imagine a pitch count limit for Ynoa today, something like 60 pitches or so, perhaps 70. Hope that can be stretched up to 4 innings to save the pen a bit.
From then I would assume Tomlin or Matzek get called to do 2 innings of work, perhaps 3 depending on the game itself. Maybe get Smith or Melancon in for the 7th if there is a save situation.
Bullpen could come out relatively ok today if things fall into place just right.

Erlin activated for the doubleheader today. Word has it he has walked just 4.8% of batters he's faced, 63 in 313 IP.

What's the Braves' thing with this guy? His minor league numbers are pedestrian, and he keeps getting called up. I don't get it. It's like forfeiting the game, because you know he'll get clobbered.
