Mark Bowman @mlbbowman The Braves took Clemson RHP Spencer Strider in the fourth round. He's a draft-eligible sophomore who missed all of 2019 recovering from Tommy John surgery. He pitched all of 12 innings this yr and showed a 95 FB, then again this day in time that is not that that exceptional. Everyone has a FB this day in time Another pitcher - on the surface it does not look like the Braves got value for their picks. Schuster at 25 was ranked number 77 and Franklin was rated 142nd. You never know but I do not get this draft, 4 more project pitchers and one of them coming off very recent TJ surgery. Schuster, Franklin and Strider to me were head scratchers given there were better ranked players out there- Strider was not even ranked They might have been able to get Strider as an undrafted free agent. Grade D for this draft

Bryce Elder is a kid with an interesting story. Baseball wasn’t his top sport until late in his high school career and he was a late addition to the Texas recruiting class in 2017. Things have worked out well for him since then, as he has gone on to become the ace for one of the top programs in the country. Elder isn’t a pitcher with overpowering stuff, in fact he only has one true plus pitch in his slider. His above average curve is his second best pitch. His fastball is more of a low 90’s pitch that gets ground balls than it is a swing and miss offering. He also has a solid average change. Elder is a solid average command guy with plenty of pitchability, enhancing the stuff. His upside is fairly limited since he doesn’t have much projection remaining, but he is a strong candidate to be a #4 starter for a big league team. There is also a chance he could have a little more yet to come since he got a bit of a late start focusing solely on baseball. I normally prefer upside to high floor, but Elder is just a kid who competes at a high level and knows how to work a hitter.
Elder is a mix of potential and floor. He should be at least a #4 starter and has a chance to be a #3 starter. Worst case scenario with his stuff, track record of success, and pitchability he is a #5 starter. Elder should have been taken long before the 156th pick in this draft as I had him among the Top 40 RHP in this draft and he doesn’t have any real question marks.

I'm ok with that. It's not like you can have 5 aces on your staff nowadays anyway. A good solid #4 and #5 starter can go a long way to helping a team's success.

I could see the day when we see 15 man pitching staffs if the game keeps going in the direction it has been
In the end how relevant is starting pitching given how the game has evolved into power, power, power and of course walks.
Its nice if you have an ace type but they are getting fewer and far between.
Of course the way it looks now we have the right/left punch at the top of the rotation in Soroka and Fried - hope they both stay healthy - Plenty of other teams do not have that. And we have a couple of kids in the system that could be well above average. So many teams are going to be forced to go with openers and long relievers.
Man, I miss the days of 20 something complete games and 300 IP and some of those guys hung around long enough to win in the high 200 to 300 games. Good old Lefty Steve Carlton, now that was a real stud and he lasted. And our own Knucksie. Real stud, Ted never should have waived him.

I guess I might have been a bit harsh on judging this draft, got to give them all a chance even if they all wind up as decent BP pieces.
Hey its the 21st century but I sure miss the later half of the 20th century baseball. 1969-1993, those were the best yrs of the game.

I did take the time to watch game 6 of the 71 WS this afternoon - those were the great days of the game Now those Orioles teams of 1969 to 71 were my favorite of all time, they should have three peated - in my opinion the 69 to 71 O's and 95 to 97 Braves are the best in my lifetime. Yea we should have three peated at that time in the mid 90's I think they were better than those A's teams of 72 to 74 and even those Yankee teams of 98 to 2000 if you judged it on talent The best team does not always get the big trophy as we well know being Braves fans, but man baseball was so so much better before all this information. We saw real pitchers, balls in play and runners in motion - the bunt, SB, etc. And the game was not basterdized by the shift as we know it now, information has ruined the game we once knew I do not pay to see relief pitchers - where have you gone Randy Johnson and Greg Maddux

I just hope we didn't use up all the bubble wrap (and masks, of course) on players we already have.

David O'Brien @dobrienatl #Braves have signed all four of their draft picks after fifth-rounder Bryce Elder, a 21-yr-old Univ. of Texas righty, agreed to $850,000 bonus. That’s $514K over his slot value ($336K) but was not at all surprising; Braves had him on their draft board as third-round talent.
