David O'Brien @dobrienatl #Braves' Duvall on hearing boos when he went out to pinch-hit for Folty: "The fans let me know that they wanted him to stay in. Which, we all did. I just wanted to have a good at-bat. I just wanted to go out there and try to make it worth it, because he was grooving out there." That's why fans aren't managers. Meh, plenty of choices all managers make don't work out every game, this one just happened to.
I've always acknowledged 90% of the moves all managers make are totally up to the luck or lack of luck that's controlled by what the players do.
I just like putting the odds in our favor more than our manager does.
I didn't like the idea of sending Duvall up there, but it worked great, so great. Flaherty threw a terrible pitch but at least Duvall capitalized on it. As poor of a breaking ball hitter as Duvall is, Flaherty threw him a fastball right in his wheelhouse so we caught a break there.
It's fair to give Snitker credit for the move, I just had to say my piece on the whole concept.

Kind of in a backhanded way, though, wouldn't you agree? I mean damn bro that was a great at bat and he crushed it. You make it sound like he just got lucky.

I just didn't give as much as you think he deserved. I didn't mean it as backhanded at all and I never in any way implied Duvall got lucky, that's just things you're reading into it.
He deserves credit and I feel like I gave him credit, I did it also in an earlier post as well.
But you can't also deny, at the same time, that he can't hit breaking balls and yet Flaherty threw him a real meatball fastball. That certainly played into it all. If our pitcher had thrown that pitch to a Cardinal batter and he homered people here would be all over our pitcher and not giving credit to the opposing hitter. That's not to take away from the fact that Duvall crushed it, he did and kudos to him for doing it, I'm just talking about the overall picture of the whole thing. Part of the point was that Flaherty has not been making mistakes, but he did there, and fortunately we were able to capitalize, it was a crushing blow to them as weak as their offense is.
While on one hand there is some luck when an ace pitcher makes a bad pitch, I do also believe in still giving credit to the hitter because they still came through, and that's hard to do even on mistake pitches. Especially late in a playoff game, with all the pressure in the world on us to win this game. I was really proud of the way our team came back today, that first game was a real ball buster and we had a lot of pressure on us to win this game today, and the guys did a great job.

When Duvall has been bad, he has missed even mistakes.
He didn't miss that mistake.
I'm going to give Snit credit for a good move... he wanted a bomb and chose Duvall as the best chance to give us a bomb. His alternative would have been Ortega, and I was okay with lifting Folty. Folty's confidence is sky high now and the pitch count means we could easily use him again.

David O'Brien @dobrienatl Folty is the first #Braves pitcher to pitch 7 or more scoreless innings in a postseason game since Hall of Famer Tome Glavine pitched 8 in Game 2 of the 2001 NLDS against Houston -- which was also the last postseason series the Braves won.

The other thing that did make it sensible to hit for Folty is how how much higher Folty's BAA has gone up as the game goes farther along. Knowing that made it a little easier to accept the move for me at the time.
Relying on Melancon scared me, I thought Fried should pitch the 9th. Melancon was about to get my blood pressure up then made some real good pitches. He still scares me going forward.
