Pick a catcher for next year! The following players are projected to reach free agency after the 2019 MLB season. Numbers in parentheses represent the age at which the player will play the 2020 season. If you see any notable errors or omissions, please contact us. Updated 8-20-19 Catchers Alex Avila (33) Welington Castillo (33) – $8MM club option with a $500K buyout Jason Castro (33) Francisco Cervelli (34) Robinson Chirinos (36) Travis d’Arnaud (31) MY CHOICE if we can sign him! Tyler Flowers (34) — $6MM club option with a $2MM buyout Yan Gomes (32) — $9MM club option with a $1MM buyout Yasmani Grandal (31) — $16MM mutual option with a $2.25MM buyout Nick Hundley (36) Chris Iannetta (37) Jonathan Lucroy (34) Martin Maldonado (33) Russell Martin (37) Brian McCann (36) Austin Romine (31) Stephen Vogt (35) Matt Wieters (34) Yuck!
If we don't sign JD (which I don't think we can) I wouldn't mind signing Grandal for 3 years. It would be a lot though because he's having another strong year. 3 years $45M.
Realistically speaking, d'Arnaud is probably the best option, then Maldonado, Castro, Robinson and maybe Martin are the only others I'd want anything to do with. And with Robinson we'd be giving up some defense for good offense from him. Cervelli was always a good choice but now his health would scare me away.
Being super duper realistic, we'll be using McCann and Flowers again next year.

Pretty sure Neck, wherever he plays won’t make us better...... I think he's a piece that makes us a deeper team. I just don't think you throw him back out there as an every day starter against all pitchers, and I fear that is what we will do.
