If Kimbrep doesn't sign before the 2019 draft, does anyone know if the draft pick compensation that's currently tagged to him becomes forfeit, and he becomes a truly unrestricted free agent?
I know there was that rumor he would wait out 2019 if need be, but I wonder if he only needs to wait until June. His market would have been bigger without the loss of a draft pick.

It is my understanding that if he signs after the draft the draft pick compensation does not apply
My thinking is his poor playoff had something to do with it as well as the loss of location
He should recover since he seems to be healthy. For what he was asking teams thought twice and more and that is understandable

I'm pretty sure (95%) that if he waits until June then the draft pick compensation does go away. I recall reading that in several different places, I just don't have time right now to look for a source.

If he waits, the team that signs him won't have to give up a draft pick.

Is it a terrible tactic? Aside from a team not having room financially you, Kimbrel would be a better option than giving up prospects in a trade. The Cubs would have likely spent big on him over trading for Chapman given the chance during their World Series run. Torres would still be a Cub.

The Cubs would have likely spent big on him over trading for Chapman given the chance during their World Series run. Torres would still be a Cub. The way I see it, I want Kimbrel badly. BUT, I understand how valuable our draft picks are given the sanctions and given last year's failed 1st round signing (which moves up where our forfeited pick would be this year). To lose that pick over a 1-3 year deal seems foolish to me. But I also understand why it's foolish to spend $15M+ on 4+ years for a reliever. So it's a real catch 22.

Given AA's extreme secrecy, and given Kimbrel has been in the Orlando area for a while ... What are the chances AA and Kimbrel have an unofficial agreement that if he can't land a mega-deal, they'll give him $10M this year, and 3/$45M thereafter ... signed the day after the draft?

Draft pick compensation is one of the worst things the players agreed to in the last CBA. It really hurts free agents if for no other reason than giving teams a convenient excuse for not signing them. At best, I think it suppresses their value.

Draft pick compensation is one of the worst things the players agreed to in the last CBA. It really hurts free agents if for no other reason than giving teams a convenient excuse for not signing them. At best, I think it suppresses their value. It's all about the QO and trying to allow clubs to hang onto their players longer. The problem is the QO is too loose -- it really hurts players, and should only come into play for the truly elite free agent. At $17M, there are too many good, B+ grade free agents who get caught up in this, when it really should only apply to the Trout's/Harper's/Machado's of the world. If I were king for a day, I'd go somewhere like football's franchising system. 3 years of club control just like today, and then replace the silly arbitration process with franchise tagging. Motivates clubs and players to sign contracts sooner, especially the mid-tier players who are most hurt by free agency. If they ride out the 3 years and don't sign contract extensions or get franchised, at least they'll be young enough to land a deal. Ftag1 = AVG salary of top 40% AAV Ftag2 = AVG salary of top 20% AAV Ftag3 = AVG salary of top 10% AAV Ftag4 = Match of the top AAV salary This allows clubs to keep the *truly* elite players for up to 7 years, but would motivate them not to franchise mid-grade players at all (allowing them to become FAs sooner), and the good-but-not-great players may only get franchised once, possibly twice. This all leads to clubs extending their players sooner, especially the mid-grade guys, or getting those kids to free agency at age ~27 instead of age ~30. Comp picks after the 1st round for a team who has used all 4 franchise tags and lost a player. No penalty picks forfeited by the team who signed a player.
