I still see us possibly trying to sign Grandal for 3 years, but I would have preferred Suzuki as his backup.

I am really surprised by this. A lot. I would have extended only one of our two current catchers and I don't think it would have been Flowers. So what exactly are we going to spend all that money on next year? I would think the plan is they're giving Flowers this deal to be the backup catcher and then go after a big name like Grandal. Otherwise I have no idea what's going on here.

I would rather have Suzuki myself as I like his bat better. If they go after a guy like Grandal then Flowers pitch framing becomes a moot point as a very part time guy.

Maybe it's because he's a baseball player guy. Honestly, though, I wouldn't be surprised if they signed Suzuki, too. You can do a lot worse. Grandal is probably gonna cost too much. Given that he's a switch hitter, that just makes him more expensive.

I'm going to throw up if we go into next season with Flowers and Suzuki as our catchers. We got super lucky with them last year, they gave us a combined WAR of 5.2 at an extremely low cost. This year they've been closer to their normal selves, combined they are at 2.2 WAR right now. We can and should do better than that. We've got some money to spend so I don't think we can rule out Grandal.

I don't think we can rule out getting another catcher on the FA market, but I would have wanted to keep Zuk as a backup.

With that said, he's a perfect fit for a 2 or 3 year deal, but he'll be looking for more than that. It's not nearly as easy of a decision as one might think, especially if Contreras continues to show well. I think the Braves sign Grandal, though. Like I said, he's a perfect fit.

You know, it's strange to know so little about the team you're in a pennant race with, but the Phailies are hurting if they're giving something up for Bautista. I guess I'm not aware of what they need because we haven't played them in forever. A lot of teams pick up a player in hopes that player will suddenly recapture his good years. Sometimes the change of scenery helps (not with us) and sometimes it does ( I don't know how he did with the Mess). I hope he plays just like he did for us with the Philths.

It was as bad as any of the bad replays not overturned in Braves games. The catcher was so clearly off the plate when he caught the ball that the entire Faillies crowd let out a huge groan when they saw it on the replay board, they assumed the call would get overturned because there was zero doubt what happened. It couldn't have been more obvious. It's just become a complete travesty.
I think they're trying to keep the umpires' success rate as high as possible. Correctomundo. MLB knows the umps are wrong a LOT, but they're in denial. They want to appear as perfect as possible and going against bad calls makes MLB look bad.

I would have extended Kurt, as I don't care that much for Flowers. I have hope when Kurt bats but very little when Flowers comes up, especially with men on.

I'm surprised they haven't make TV networks take the strike zone box off the screen, because it gives away on a nightly basis how bad the umps are at calling balls and strikes. I know it's not easy, but they do a terrible job. And the shame of it is since we have this technology, the umps could obviously use it after games to help themselves get better, but they don't. There's zero accountability.

I remember when showing a replay in slow motion on the big screen at a stadium was a huge no-no because it might show up an ump.
Now they embarass themselves much worse by not overturning obvious calls a we sit here with super slo-mo and 5 different replay angles.

I heard time and time again that a Snit team would be nothing if not fundamentally sound. Needlessly taking that ball on the backhand is not sound, and I don't know why they aren't drilling that out of Swanson.
All I can imagine is that they know Swanson was allowed to play that way his entire life and trying to change him at this point would be so unnatural to him it might have worse results.
