The (Saturday) game between the Atlanta Braves and Washington Nationals has been postponed because of the threat of all-day rain.
The makeup date was not announced at the time of the postponement Saturday.
The series between the NL East rivals is scheduled to conclude Sunday with the All-Star pitching matchup of Mike Foltynewicz (7-5, 2.66) against Max Scherzer (12-5, 2.41). That game is to start 1:35 p.m., though rain is forecast.
Braves pitcher Sean Newcomb (8-5, 3.51 ERA) and the Nationals' Gio Gonzalez (6-6, 3.72) were Saturday's scheduled starting pitchers.
The Braves, battling Philadelphia for the division lead, beat Washington 8-5 on Friday. Washington fell to 48-49 with the loss and has dropped three of four games.
Scherzer, who started the All-Star game Tuesday night at Nationals Park, engaged in a heated spat with fellow starter Stephen Strasburg in the dugout during Friday night's defeat.

My fantasy for this game (if the rain holds off of course):
Scherzer struggles, Strasburg gets in his face and yells nanna nanna poo poo and other things, they brawl, and they each break their pitching hand in the fight.

Ozzie Albies will miss one fewer game and the Braves can wait a little longer to determine who might fill the vacant spot in their starting rotation. These were the positives created by the postponement of Saturday night's game against the Nationals at Nationals Park. Due to inclement weather, the Nationals announced the postponement approximately five hours before the scheduled first pitch. A makeup date has not been announced. But with the Braves making just one more trip to Nationals Park this season, the game might be made up as part of a doubleheader on Aug. 7. View Full Game Coverage The division rivals share a common off-day on Aug. 6. But if the game were to be rescheduled for that date, the Braves would play games in 35 days within a 36-day span, and the Nationals would end up playing 28 days within a 29-day span. Albies exited Friday's win because of a tight right hamstring. The All-Star second baseman is doubtful for the remainder of this weekend, and he seems questionable to appear in the two-game set that begins Monday in Miami. Instead of having Saturday's scheduled starter Sean Newcomb take the mound for Sunday's series finale, the Braves will instead go with Mike Foltynewicz. This allows Newcomb to start Monday's game against the Marlins, who rank second-to-last in the Majors with a .657 OPS against left-handed pitchers. With Newcomb lined up for Monday, Julio Teheran will be pushed back a day to start Tuesday afternoon's finale against the Marlins. The Braves had been leaning toward activating Max Fried from the disabled list to make Tuesday's start. Tickets from Saturday's postponement will be honored for the rescheduled game. The tickets can also be exchanged for any other 2018 regular-season game at Nationals Park. The exchange must be made before the rescheduled game is played. www.mlb.com/braves/news/braves-nationals-july-21-game-rained-out/c-286696010

WEATHER UPDATE 11:00 AM EDT 22 July 2018 The low pressure are that was responsible for yesterday's rain tracked a bit farther west than anticipated increasing rain totals in the DC area dumping 2.5"-5"+ before ending early Sunday morning. Here in south central PA west of Harrisburg I measured 3.25" in my gauge. That being said more rain is in store for the Mid Atlantic states over the next 4-5 days. Showers should begin to pickup around noon today and some heavy showers are possible this afternoon. This disturbance is moving in from the Ohio Valley in the wake of yesterday's system. Once again the play-ability of today's game is in doubt. Expect some heavy downpours and scattered thunderstorms with ~.25" and possibly more depending on exactly where the heavier showers develop. Today's showers and storms will be much more intermittent in nature today than the steady rain yesterday so there is some hope for baseball, albeit with possibly a rain delay or two, but periods of rain, some heavy, could linger for a while if it moves into the area. Models haven't picked up on much more than .25" yet (HRRR is currently at .5" in some areas around DC) but given the dynamics it's certainly possible that some places in the DC area could have .5"-1" or even a bit more by evening. Scattered showers and thunderstorms will develop later this morning and this afternoon and will persist through the remainder of today and unsettled weather with showers and thunderstorms will remain through Wednesday. I'll look at the radar before game time. -PA

Interesting.
I always assumed they just used Harper's foreskin as the tarp in Washington.

Tarp going back on the field in D.C. HOOVER DAM Yup... just took a quick look at the radar. Showers and storms in the area and some farther to the south moving north. Could be a few breaks in the rain but without any further development I wouldn't expect this current mesoscale complex to pass until about 2:15-2:30 PM. Short break ends soon and rain should then continue at intermittent levels for about an hour, some heavy, until it passes through. Coverage and intensity has decreased slightly over the last 30 minutes. Game time probably 3PM at the earliest. I'll keep a close tab on development and movement. -PA GO BRAVES

I'm sure they don't want to waste Scherzer in a possible rain out or long rain delay. Although we should be able to get underway there is no guarantee showers and storms won't cause delays before the game is completed although currently it looks good after this complex passes through.
