No -- he knew what he was doing and he was a pompous azz to think he was bigger than the game And he kept on lying about it -- he deserved what he got W SOMEBODY got 4256 hits, without HGH!!!!! Most of them were harmless singles Then again I was never a big Rose fan anyway -- but for what he did on the field he was deserving Had he been honest and come clean and not lied for 15 plus years baseball would have been more forgiving You want a guy from that Big Red Machine team that should be there -- consider Dave Concepcion -- dominating player and great offensive numbers for a shortstop for his era. I thought Bench and Perez were the guys who made that team go I just cannot stand the guy I would make a stronger argument for Bonds and Clemens over Petey Cheap Shot

I took another look at Tommy John's record
He would be a border line HOF guy but there are HOF pitchers who have had higher than a 3.34 career ERA and his .555 winning percentage is not the worst
He lost part of two prime yrs in 1968 and 1974 cause of injuries and missed 1975
He was a legit CY Young award candidate in 74 until he was shut down due to the surgery that became famous
For sure he would have hit the 300 W milestone had he had complete yrs in 68 and 74
He was one of the best pitchers in that 70's decade -- very effective with dominant numbers from 1977 to 81 and very good from 72 till the injury
Was quite good for some mediocre CWS teams in the late 60;s to 71 before the trade to the Dodgers
I used to think of him as the hall of very good but another deeper look I would put him in Cooperstown
Class guy too -- not a jerk like Pete Rose

Jim Kaat -- similar W numbers to John but overall I think of him as Hall of very good, not really HOF -- do not think he was as good as TJ
What put TJ over the stretch for me was that 1977 to 81 part of his career when he was dominant -- 3 20 W yrs and with post season teams -- helped get to the WS 3 times in that time
