Did you see him gun down Corbin Carroll yesterday? A rocket of a throw right on the bag. I said the Brewers got a steal in that trade but without Esteury Ruiz from the Brewers to the A's the trade wouldn't have happened and they got a boatload for him in return, enhanced by the Braves determination to get Murphy by giving up Contreras too. In fact, I felt that the trade was so one sided I thought maybe Adames was coming to Atlanta also and it just hadn't been announced yet. Many thought we were searching for possible a Dansby replacement or insurance at that time. The Brewers also got a good setup guy in Payamps. The Braves valued a proven catcher with a track record in Murphy while Contreras still had questions about about his defense. I'm not unhappy with Murphy but the Brewers got way more and gave up way less than anyone in that trade. Yep, I completely agree. It’s one of those things—we haven’t had a proven solid two way catcher since Javy in my opinion, McCann just wasn’t very good defensively. Having gone so long with patchwork catchers year after year I was really happy to get Murphy. I expect he’ll be worth it in the long run. But I did feel gut punched giving up Contreras, I felt it was clear he was always going to hit. The defense was questionable at the time so AA did what he thought he had to do. I thought Adames was a real good option, he just had a .717 OPS 94 wRC+ season, very surprising. Good numbers with the glove still. It will be interesting to see if we stick with Arcia. He did end up with a .741 OPS and 99 wRC+. He showed a pretty bad lack of range in my opinion and got a little sloppy in the field, likely from playing so much and getting worn down. He ended up with a 2.3 WAR, pretty mediocre in the end. Which is fine, I can live with that given the situation, it will just be interesting to see what we do. I figure they’ll go with him and sign him cheap for 2-3 years. Adames had a down year. I think he'll bounce back. Those numbers compared to Arcia will probably be reversed or more next year but I hope Arcia can continue to play well. Adames has been mostly a 25-30 HR , 80+ RBI guy, 110-120 OPS+ guy and he's only 28. Also Tim Anderson will be interesting to see what he get as a FA and if he can bounce back.

Murphy, like Olson, came to a new league… he may have a turn around season in ‘24, after this year of transition is behind him… hopefully.

Murphy, like Olson, came to a new league… he may have a turn around season in ‘24, after this year of transition is behind him… hopefully. Murphy had a .999 OPS the first half….I think lack of ABs in the second half exacerbated what would have been a normal slump. Asking an everyday player to just play every other day is a pretty major deal in my opinion.

Mark Bowman @mlbbowman · 30m Snit said Fried felt fine last night. He pitched the first inning with nothing on his finger and then the next four innings with the Band-Aid. There doesn’t seem to be any concern about Fried’s availability for the NLDS. He’ll likely start Game 2 on Monday

There was a short period where he and Travis were both clicking, playing part time, so it’s hard to understand how his offense became almost MIA in the second half.

Kelly Crull @kelly_Crull · 2h Snit also commented on the environment with fans at these workout games: “It’s been perfect really. After what we did last year. I love the fans in there. The energy the guys have had has been really good. I think it’s been about as good as you can get.” #Braves

In the first half Murphy had 231 ABs and d'Arnaud had 131. I dont know why that ratio changed, but I do feel like it might be a big part of the problem. All hitters have slumps, so even if they maintained that first half ratio it would be normal for Murphy to slump to some degree, but I feel pretty strongly that playing every other day has made it worse for Murphy. No player can really be expected to find a groove when they just play every other day. d'Arnaud seems to be ok doing it because he's not been an every day catcher, he's had an entire career of doing that playing part time. But guys who are used to playing most or all games are going to have an issue with losing so many ABs.

I like Murphy too, but I never liked trading Contreras. As cost conscious as the Braves are, it just never made much sense to me. We're paying our catchers what, about $20 million? Seems that money would have been better utilized on another starter. Contreras might turn out to be AA's Wainwright.
