He seems to me to be one of those guys who is “effectively wild” as they say, but nobody can be consistently good pitching that way. He seems to never know where the ball is going and neither do the hitters. Moylan is the same way. I can’t stand to watch either of them pitch.

The cat is just not that good. Is it possible we are reacting in the extreme. It was certainly a horrible way to end a otherwise very good game. There were other opportunities to win that game last night. The Lane Adam's incident was potentially one of them. Swanson had already scored the winning run. Sent from my SM-N950U using Tapatalk

In 2017, Viz had a WHIP of 1.088, 10 strikeouts per nine innings, and a 2.83 ERA He also gave up 21 BB in 57 innings. In his career he's given up 78 BB in 156 innings. That's a huge ongoing problem in critical game ending situations. I'm never worried about him being hit, his BAA was .199 last year and it's .154 this year. It's .219 for his career. But I always know he's in danger of walking a guy or two every time he comes in. If you try to reel in his control, is he going to get hit more often then? That's what I meant about effectively wild--guys can't hit him because they have no clue what to expect every time he throws the ball. But he doesn't either. And it's going to bite us at times. It's nerve racking for me to watch, I know that.

All true about the control... and it makes me wonder about the decision to give him the closers job, but ya know.... veteran presents..

I just hope Snitker doesn't pull a Bobby Cox/Fredi and stick with Vizcaino all year if he keeps struggling with his control.
He already has 6 walks this season in 3.2 innings.

Vizzy got the closer role because of a lack of better options. I have no doubt that if Minter excels this year, he'll be the closer at some point.
And Vizzy is as someone else called it; effectively wild. The dude has skills, but there's a reason why relievers are relievers, and I think last night we saw one reason why Vizzy is a reliever.
