So what is the solution? Just pay them more money? Is low-level minor league ball for thousands of players supposed to be sustainable career? Are all minor league clubs financially soluble enough that they can pay everyone a livable wage for their 8 months or so of work?
That first story was sad, but it seemed there were multiple issues going on there that complicated the mental health angle.
It's a very complicated issue.

Personally I am very surprised at what small crowds they draw at AAA games. That is good baseball to go watch in person, but there's a lot of games all over the league where there can't be more than 500 people at the game. I've always enjoyed watching the games in Charlotte. It's not MLB but it's still really good quality ball. I've paid $13 per month for several years to watch any minor league game anywhere, and I watch quite a few, even if it's mostly on fast forward, and it's entertaining and fun to watch prospects. One note though, if you think the MLB umpiring is dreadful, and it is, you should see these minor leagues games. It's not even close to what you get in the majors, it's almost like these minor league umps have never done it, it is truly awful how inconsistent they are.

Obviously, I don't have access to the numbers, but there is assuredly enough money in major league coffers to do better. For example, if you have 200 minor league players in an organization, $5 million would amount to $25K for each player. If the Braves can throw $11 million at a Drew Smyly, they can surely do better by their minor leaguers.

If it costs you a player upgrade on your pro team is it really worth paying 200 guys when maybe 3 of them or 5 of them will ever make it in the big leagues on your team? I’m not trying to make that argument, just wondering out loud. Even if say 10 of the those guys make it you’re still paying an awful lot of dead weight. I think that obviously our owner could provide us with a $300 million dollar payroll but they don’t think it’s wise for whatever reason. Even if it’s just greed. I just always find it hard to criticize how other people choose to spend their money. I’m not trying to call you down, I’m just trying to see their side of it, being a business owner myself for so long. There’s some kind of balance point in there that is different for everybody, while they’re also trying to make money for themselves. I realize these bastards are getting mega rich off of it, and maybe it’s not all fair, but to me it is what it is and I just accept that. Our owners and GM do a good job of keeping us happy for the most part while they also fill their bank accounts up.

The other side to that too is the old adage “you have to spend money to make money.” It took me several years in the beginning to buy into that, but once I tried it as an experiment it was shocking how true it was. You have to spend wisely, but if you do it is mind blowing how much better it can pay off. There’s just some kind of middle ground each person has to find and you have to be willing to try things. Like we tried with Drew Smyly. Sometimes ya have failures and you hopefully learn from them!

I agree with you about telling others how to spend their money and all that. I'm a free market conservative all the way, trust me. I also understand that a lot of these guys are chasing a dream that's never gonna come true. However, you can't play games without all of these guys. If you can't play games, you can't develop your top prospects. There's a solution there somewhere. It might just take some creativity.

They should have midget tossing at the big league parks and use the money they make from that to pay the minor league teams.

You should get on the phone.......NOW. LMAO

You should get on the phone.......NOW. LMAO When you go to the ballpark now there's pretty much everything ELSE going on there, why not include the midget toss and benefit from it.
The last time I was at Truist I went around the outfield side of the walkway to get some food, and there was so much going on back there you didn't even know there was a baseball game going on at the time.
