Spin the wheel, roll the dice, flip a coin, aaaaaaaand our AAA big league starting pitcher for tonight is...............VINES!!! WAHOO! I don't know any team that went into the season with 6 viable MLB starters. I don't know many that actually had 5. Most have 3-4 tops, and then a gaggle of JAGs. I do understand the sentiment however with counting on Sale and Morton being up in years and the recent history of injury, but there's a dearth of starting pitching in MLB.

It was much more doable in the the offseason than now to set ourselves up to at least be at less risk. That was always my point, let's not take such a risk. When Sale goes on the I.L. it's going to be a whole lot uglier. Part of the risk was converting Lopez back to starting, he'll also like wear down from the innings as the season wears on. I think there's a difference between big league JAGs and AAA JAGs and we're trying to go with the AAA JAGs. I never screamed for us to be signing some aces this offseason, just some legit backed protection so we didn't end up where we are already, in the same frustrating boat as last year.

Pope Snitker would like to remind everybody this is no big deal, this spot in the rotation will only come up 30 more games this year. And it's only 25-30 more if Sale gets hurt, the Dodd and Shuster et al caliber dudes will be just fine, no biggie.

Vines doesn't have a clue where his pitches are going within 2 feet. Walks another batter.

Mark Bowman @mlbbowman · 20m After Thurs. game, Snit talked about how it was tough for Winans to start for the first time in nine days. That's when I asked if they would try to get Elder lined up to where he doesn't make his first start w/ too much rest. Elder could go tomorrow for GWI and Sun. for ATL.
Buckeye Mike @mfball11 · 25m @mlbbowman any reason why the Braves keep calling up pitchers not named elder?

They just showed him in the dugout and he looked like he was juggling false teeth.

Matt Gelb @mattgelb · 1m Still in awe the Rockies sent their Opening Day starter to pinch-run in the eighth inning of a tie game -- in which they had yet to use a bench player -- and then his front foot didn't land on slide at plate. He also injured his right (non-throwing) arm.

Vines is creeping up on the Astros with a ton of off speed pitches the last two innings.
