I'll admit, I'm influenced by failing to capitalize on yesterday's opportunity, and dropping a very winnable second game. However, if I'm AA, anything less than a sweep of the next 3 puts me in sell mode. This team has just blown too many winnable games (Rays series), and if they don't make their move now, it's time to hit the eject button.
So what's your "sell" roster look like? I say we see what we have, but perhaps not in the way you're thinking (I'm not talking about Waters and Pache).
1. Fried
2. Anderson
3. Muller
4. Ynoa
5. Toussant
To state the obvious moves, we flip Morton and Smyly. Run the kids out there, see how they perform.
1. L Matzek
2. R Greene
3. L Newcomb
4. R Chavez
5. L Minter
6. R Santana
7. R Wilson
8. R Wright
We blow up the pen, and see if Wright and Wilson response with a more "attack" oriented, all-out approach that comes from the bullpen. DFA Tomlin, and get what you can for Smith, Martin, and Jackson. See how Newcomb responds to some high leverage bullpen work -- what've you got to lose, other than more games?
1. CF L Pederson
2. 2B S Albies
3. 1B L Freeman
4. 3B R Riley
5. C_ R D'Arneau
6. SS R Swanson
7. LF S Camargo
8. RF R Demeritte
Why keep Pederson? Well, with his mutual option, he might be part of our 2022 club. He also wouldn't fetch all that much anyway; he's not been on a heater that would significantly change his trade value. Then again, if we do flip him, just swap Heredia into the starting lineup. Better defensive arrangement that way.
With D'Arneau, while he doesn't have a contractual option for 2022, I'm hoping he'll entertain a 1yr "rebuild value" offer to stay in ATL in 2022.
For the outfield ... We know what we have in Almonte and Heredia. We have bench pieces. Arcia was an interesting look, but it hasn't translated, and he's never hit at MLB level. Camargo's putting up similar numbers to what Arcia did in AAA, and Camargo DOES have a history of performing at MLB. He just hasn't had consistent opportunities since the Donaldson signing. He just doesn't perform on the bench, he might be one of those guys who really needs to play everyday. So let's try that out and see if 2018 Camargo is still in there.
Demeritte is on fire in AAA, so I feel like we're obligated to see if he's figured something out. He was a 1st round talent and a blue-chip prospect when we originally acquired him -- maybe he's finally rounded into form, and we have a hidden gem.
Lastly, I would not promote Waters, Pache, or Contreras. The first two still need to figure AAA out, and Contreras needs to extend his AAA heater before I'm convinced he's ready for a second shot. Besides, he needs to play everyday, and if I'm hoping to retain D'Arneau on a 1yr ext, that won't happen in ATL.
I would promote Alex Jackson once rosters expand -- see if maybe another crack translates into results. He can't be worse than Kevan Smith has been.
