and what does 80 wins get you? Nothing any different than 75, except maybe a worse draft pick. Again... thank the gods our GM doesn't think like you. If he keeps Morton and Smyly it will be because he thinks we can win the division, not because he thinks we can get to 80 wins instead of 75. Or, that the potential compensatory pick is better than what is being offered in trade. That is a good reason to hold. I do not think a GM sets a goal to be .500 but as a fan, I prefer .500 over say, low 70's wins. Just me, if you just throw away a third of a season than as a fan, I feel cheated. That is how I felt during the 3 year teardown. I get that you can't win every yr but I ask for your best efforts to put a competitive team. In Alex's time here I think he has done that even if he is not always right. Sure beats that unmentionable 3 yr stretch. And note that some of those trades for a quantity of prospects well, you might hit the goldmine or trade the golden nuggett for a bunch of yard sale junk. There have been enough prospects who have been moved that have done next to nothing.

So a non-guaranteed potential chance for a pick you will use to get an unproven prospect is better than an unproven prospect where you at least have seen some body of work on in the MiLB.
Okay.. gotcha

Okay.. gotcha Sometimes, yes. All depends but would take the pick over what some of those returns teams have got over the yrs. Like that Machado non-return for the Orioles. I would have taken ny chances with the pick over Casey Kotchman and Steve Marek.

So you are going to look at some cherry picked situations where a prospect has worked out to support your position and then look at other cherry picked situations where they didn't to support your position.
That is an argument of the absurd.

That is an argument of the absurd. Yep. That is my stand and I am sticking to it. Not that its always right, but not always wrong. Once in a while you get a gem like the Astros got with Jeff Bagwell and the Braves with John Smoltz. Tampa Bay unloading Chris Archer worked out fine for them But when you get into these quantity of unknown meh prospects well, more than not what you get is someone else's goodwill baggage. I cannot post out every trade made out there nor do I have the time to do so, but you tell me that taking the compensation pick might be a better bet than some one's struggling class A wanna bee? Of course I get that picks can have their issues too. Never any guarantees. Now if you get the exceptional looking return fine but teams are not parting with the top end of their system and we know that. More prospects fail than be real impact guys that is how it goes
