Well that was a pretty ugly unfocused inning. We're kinda lucky they only got 2. Are we seeing the return of Luke the Puke? He hasn’t been sharp in two of his last three outings.

He always scares me even when he's on a roll, because he's proven time and time again he's going to come back down to Earth soon enough and be terrible again.

It amazes me in this day of 10 man bullpens, that we have seen so many position players pitching in games. The excuse, well we are saving the bullpen is just stupid. I know at least 2 times this year I am aware of a team using 2 position players to pitch in a game. This is also coming in a year where doubleheaders are 7 innings and not 9 as well. With this philosophy, maybe the Braves should have resigned Culberson for his arm. Heck, if Charlie was a Cub, he might hit double digits in Relief appearances. Maybe its just me, but it seems to me that far more innings this year has been pitched by position players then any year in recent memory (No crack here about Ohtani, he is a pitcher in those games) I agree with you, but one of the problems is it is so common now for starting pitchers to only pitch 3, 4 or 5 innings. Nowadays if a starter goes 6 innings it's almost a surprise, like a bonus. Teams get into the bullpens so early and then we still see relief pitchers rarely pitching to more than the three batter minimum. It's all stupid in my opinion. A lot of teams are doing it on purpose because stats show the more times hitters see a pitcher in a game the better they do, so they want hitters to face a different pitcher as often as possible. Well, that comes at a steep price.

Smart teams see opportunities to not burn their bullpen arms and throw out position players. We not only never do that in blowout losses... we often use our best guys in blowout wins.

The game is suffering immensely from being over analyzed and over managed. You do that, then teams run out of pitchers. I'll be glad when some organization/manager comes along and successfully goes back to the basics. Analytics are great tools, but they've taken over the game, and now the game sucks.

We will be down 1 run tomorrow, and roll out Newcomb. 8th inning, bases loaded nobody out, and in comes Newcomb. Always use a guy who has trouble throwing strikes in the highest leverage spots possible.
