I’m sorry but anyone who claims Smith is having a strong season and can be moved at the deadline is on some wicked dope. It only takes one team to take him, all AA can do is ask Actually the writer was not that far off the wall on some of the numbers but you and I know about his gross meltdowns in games when we need the close out most He also has success in the past and is a healthy arm. I don't care if they get a pile of dirty socks for him if another team takes the money. Do I think it can happen, my guess is 50/50. Thankfully he got the job done tonight, but no one is going to pay closer money for him at the deadline when he's not really a closer. If he was making half of what he is and was a setup man we could move him, but not with what he's owed just to go somewhere to be a setup man. As much number spouting as I do I still think it's a 50/50 thing, because the eye test shows us clearly that he does not have closer stuff. That's just talking about his actual physical "stuff", because I don't think he has the mental makeup for it either.....he sure grooves an awful lot of pitches.

I think Smith can be traded if the Braves eat some money, especially given the number of teams that are lacking in the pen and in the race for a playoff spot. Thing is, the return will likely be next to nothing. HOWEVER, if the Braves eat half of his salary for 2022, that's a savings of $6.5 million, so the question is whether or not you can replace him for that amount of money. Without doing a bunch of research, my gut feeling is that you probably can do better. Here's a list I found of all free agent relievers for 2022: www.spotrac.com/mlb/free-agents/relief-pitcher/

With him having another full season at $13M that makes it way more unlikely no one will want him. The other thing about it, I don’t think the Braves are unhappy with him so I don’t think they’ll look to move him anyway. Unless we clearly become sellers by the deadline, at which point I think we wouldn’t be willing to eat any salary because....we aren’t unhappy with him. That’s my impression anyway!

Without doing alot of research on this yrs performance, some of those guys on the FA spotrac list are actually worse than Smith. Unless all the money can be moved even if we become sellers, might as well hold on Especially if there is little or no return what is the point of eating half his salary, its not as if he is always Tomlin or what Jim Johnson was. He (Smith) has decent save numbers but the pitches he grooves is frustrating to watch. I don't think the Braves are as unhappy with him as we as a group are. One of the notable guys on the list, Kirby Yates who was good has been injured. Andrew Miller, not so great this yr. Not all that hot on that bunch
