What should the Atlanta Braves do with Will Smith at the deadline? With a few weeks remaining before the trade deadline, it is anyone’s guess if the Atlanta Braves will be buyers, sellers, or both this season. With a tough schedule coming out of the break, the Braves could easily find themselves well out of the division race by the end of July, and that might mean they move on from their closer, Will Smith. If the Braves do become sellers at this year’s deadline, I think there is one move they need to consider making and that is moving Will Smith. Now, I like Smith and think he has been better than given credit for at times, but it would make sense for the Braves to move him if they are indeed sellers at the deadline. Before we talk about moving Smith, let us begin by taking a look at his 2021 season. In thirty-nine games, Smith’s 2021 looks like: 37.2 innings pitched, 18 saves, 3.58 ERA, 11.71 K/9, 2.87 BB/9, and 0.96 HR/9. Overall, that is a really strong line. Now, take a look at more advanced metrics: xERA: 2.99 FIP: 3.06 xFIP: 3.76 xBA: .200 xSLG: .325 wOBA: .279 xwOBA: .266 xwOBAcon: .342 Hard Hit%: 37% K%: 31.6% BB%: 7.7% The metrics back up the notion that Smith is having a strong season. He might not be a lockdown closer, but he is a reliable option at the backend of the bullpen. It is important to note that this article is looking at this option if the Braves decide to become sellers. The Braves are in an interesting spot in that they could easily be atop the NL East in a couple weeks or they could be out of the race entirely. Seeing as the Braves have acquired Joc Pederson and Stephen Vogt this week, it seems the team is at least trying to patch things together for a run at another division title and playoff run. However, if the Braves are not going to be contenders this year, it would make sense to shop Smith. Every year, contenders look to improve their bullpens at the deadline because of the importance they play during the playoffs. There are a few teams in the playoff race that could use some help in the bullpen. The Chicago White Sox rank 11th in bullpen ERA (3.88), the Oakland A’s are 12th (3.95), the Toronto Blue Jays are 13th (3.97), and the Houston Astros are 16th (4.09). These teams have decent bullpens but could benefit from adding a player like Smith. There is one team that has a great offense, solid pitching, but is being brought down by a terrible bullpen. That would be the Cincinnati Reds, who have a bullpen ERA of 5.15 (27th). There could be a few teams interested in adding Will Smith for a playoff push. If teams call about Smith, the Braves should listen. How should the Atlanta Braves go about shopping Will Smith if they decide to make him available? Well, I believe there are two strategies they should consider. tomahawktake.com/2021/07/20/atlanta-braves-will-smith-deadline/

Smith wilts when the pressure is on, or at least it seems that way to me.

As long as another team takes on the rest of the contract - sell and get what you can.
Maybe a lower level prospect but it frees you up some for the off season
So, cut bait and run.
He and Ender being gone, that helps. Likely they do not pay Smyly 11 mil per either. Smyly could be a trade piece too
Smith's numbers are not the worst but he has had some grossly bad meltdowns but he is good enough that another team just might take that money off our hands

David O'Brien @dobrienatl #Braves made a change in pitching plans. Touki Toussaint is now starting tonight instead of Kyle Muller, who will start Game 1 of Wednesday's doubleheader. Charlie Morton still set for Game 2 of the doubleheader.Toussaint is now starting tonight instead of Kyle Muller, who will start Game 1 of Wednesday's doubleheader. David O'Brien @dobrienatl After Triple-A Gwinnett rained out today, scheduled Gwinnett starter Bryse Wilson was moved to Wednesday doubleheader. Allows #Braves to use him as 27th man w/out roster move, gives Morton extra day of rest. Also, Braves' top 3 will be lined up to face Mets in the 9-inning games.

David O'Brien @dobrienatl Travis d'Arnaud has made big strides in rehab lately, will accompany #Braves on the road and do some hitting and other early work before games.

David O'Brien @dobrienatl #Braves' Huascar Ynoa (on IL past 2 months with broken hand) is scheduled to throw live batting practice this week and is on schedule to pitch in a game at the Florida complex next week.

Mark Bowman @mlbbowman Still looks like d'Arnaud could return w/in the next few weeks and Ynoa could be ready in August's second half. d'Arnaud is taking swings with both hands and catching pitches from a machine. Ynoa threw a side session yesterday and could begin building up innings by end of July.

*** WEATHER UPDATE*** METMAN WEATHER SERVICES 20 July 2021 4:30 PM EDT Atlanta Metro Area BRAVES GAME FORECAST (7:20 PM) Game Time Forecast: Mostly cloudy and humid with a chance of showers and isolated thunderstorms. Temperatures generally in mid to upper 70's dropping to the low 70's by 11 PM. ESE winds < 5 MPH becoming light and variable at times. Max gust tonight is 15 MPH. Several models picking up on some heavier rainfall for game time but the majority of regional models indicate less. The atmospheric profile shows high saturation in the low and mid levels so some heavy downpours are possible anywhere over north central/central GA this evening associated with the stationary front that is currently positioned across northern GA (i.e. near Atlanta also). I'm expecting the heavier activity to be south of the ball park (i.e. the stationary front) with isolated heavier showers areas to the north thus a few showers/thunderstorms are possible anywhere in the vicinity although the expected precipitation is <.1". High resolution models suggests that activity winds down after 9 PM. Precipitation should be less widespread and not nearly as heavy in most places as last night.
Tomorrow: Mostly cloudy with a chance of scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms. Temperature likely in the 70's for both games. Chance should diminish later in the evening. Light W/SW winds at 3-6 MPH. -PA GO BRAVES!!!

There is one team that has a great offense, solid pitching, but is being brought down by a terrible bullpen. That would be the Cincinnati Reds, who have a bullpen ERA of 5.15 (27th). The Braves are right behind the Reds in terms of runs scored. Our Starting pitching has been solid. Our bullpen has lost the 2nd most games in the league, at 22... and we've plated 4 less games than the team with 24, so we have plenty of opportunity to take the lead from them.
