Atlanta sports history
The Hawks/Braves/Falcons had terrible ownership for quite awhile. The Flames were purchased on borrowed money with no TV deal worth a dime at a time when interest rates were 21%. The Hawks and The Thrashers were both owned by Atlanta Spirit LLC and that was a complete disaster. Then on top of that, the NHL commish went on a
cash grab when he allowed the Thrashers to be sold to Winnipeg. Rankin Smith, was a drunken sot who had no business owning a pro sports franchise. Uncle Arty Blank has been better, but he has a terrible habit of falling in love with players and thinking of them as family and has made some huge contract offering mistakes. The Braves were a total joke until Bobby Cox and then Scheurholtz became the GM's. While some claim that the Braves owners are "cheap", most dont understand the current situation with their owners; Liberty Media. LM acquired the Braves as part of a stock and asset swap with Time-Warner. Federal law prohibits LM from putting money into the Braves because of the way the transaction was structured. The Braves must exist on their own revenue, and they have one of the worst TV deals in MLB. As a pecentage of revenue, the Braves spend as much on their team as do the Yankees... the Yanks just have a ton more revenue. The reason the Braves TV deal is so terrible Is that Time-Warner set up the TV deal with themselves before they sold the Braves... structuring a deal great for TW but bad for the Braves.
That all being said... despite the Braves post-season failure, the only year they really should have won it and didn't was 96 when they lost to the Yanks after being up 2-0.
The other years they were like the United... set up to win a long season but not a relatively short grinding post-season.
The Flames were a economic casualty.
The Thrashers were bad ownership with a conspiracy involved with their move.
The Hawks have had terrible ownership.
The real kicker is the Falcons who after decades of futility have actually become a good organization with an incredible penchant for choking.
In 2012 they should have gone to the SB, but a player tripped on a white line while running in the open field. Then of course there was 2016.
So ya know what...
If we actually win the MLS Cup we should celebrate like rap stars at the MTV
Awards.
