Baseball is a cruel business, no?

That is interesting. No matter what happens, this incident will have been unbelievably expensive for Ozuna. My guess is that he'll get a suspended sentence and avoid jail time. He'll be suspended by MLB for a year. That will basically cost him what remains of the first 2 years of his contract. The Braves might negotiate a settlement of some kind (probably in their best interests, depending on what happens with Ozuna) and give him his unconditional release. Ozuna will wind up in the Mexican League or somewhere like that, and if he behaves and he performs well, he MIGHT get back in the big leagues sometime in the future.........MIGHT. It's a shame what has happened to him. He seemed like a decent guy, and maybe he is. He's played his last game for the Braves, though. You can take that to the bank. IMO.

Retiring seemed like an extreme reaction.
Then I looked at his career minor league stats.
166 innings pitched, 134 walks.
Yikes.
Sean Newcomb is the pitcher that I feel the least confidence in to throw strikes, and Pint's minor league numbers were twice as bad as Newcomb's major league numbers. Imagine watching that.
It did say he would hit triple digits on the radar gun. How did that work out for him? Maybe if he calmed things down a little, who knows......

He's only 23, so it seems a year away to get your sheet together and try to figure something out makes sense. I don't see why you'd give up on a lucrative career possibility, but who knows?

Baseball is a cruel business, no? I don't see anything particularly cruel here. It was his choice. The team is open to him coming back. He is just one of thousands of young players who try and make it in baseball and struggle. He got paid a 4.8mil signing bonus to play a kids game for an additional 4 years. Sign me right up for that sort of cruelty.

I guess it depends on how long he's out due to legal processes and any suspension baseball gives him, I don't know for sure how our organization will react. If we end up having to pay him three full seasons then what?
We've taken a long series of hits to our reputation going to back to Coppy/Hart getting caught doing the exact same thing every team in baseball was doing. If we go ahead and pay Ozuna and bring him back say next year, or even the year after, it makes us look pretty bad in my opinion. Do we say screw it and just morph into the Oakland Raiders? A team that doesn't care at all about it's reputation? At least then we could start throwing at other teams stars when Acuna gets hit.
I don't see us doing that. We've had a pretty strong standard for our rep for a long time and I expect that to remain. But it sure is a lot of money. It's a tough call. In my opinion we should whack him no matter what we have to pay him and move on. So we take a big hit and it costs us signing another player. So be it. I would think most fans would understand.
We could also start a big GOFUNDME program to whack Ozuna and then have the money to sign another big hitter.

I would have to wonder how much effort he's put into seeking advice from different people regarding his control issues. I can see a walk per inning at the minor league driving anybody out of their mind. But if it were me I'd sure spend some time seeking some coaching from some top guys and go through sessions with a sports psychologist before I quit. There's been guys who completely lost their control and got it back, like Matzek for instance. Maybe he just needs some coaching from the right person. Maybe that wouldn't help, but why not try it before giving up. I'll bet about 6 months as a plumbers assistant might chance his mind, lol......

Yeah, crawling around cleaning drains and replacing valves could work wonders!

Maybe he just lost his passion to keep pursuing it and decided his life was defined by more than just baseball... who knows.
.... but a 4.8 mil signing bonus can go a long way to getting a head start on whatever you want your life to be.

Very true. I can't imagine what would be better than playing ball 6 or 7 months per year and making millions doing it. That's just me, though.

BTW, I'll predict that Kevin Gausman is gonna drop off a cliff before much longer. He's nowhere near this good.

*** WEATHER UPDATE*** METMAN WEATHER SERVICES 8 June 2021 4:15 PM EDT Philadelphia Metro Area BRAVES GAME FORECAST (7:05 PM) Synopsis: A moist and heavily saturated air mass up to 30,000 feet is resulting in PWAT's of ~2". Fortunately, little lift is being provided outside of normal daytime heating so most thunderstorm activity should quickly decrease in intensity and coverage in the early evening hours and dissipate within an hour or two after sunset. Storms over the next two days will be slowing moving due to the weak steering flow aloft so some areas could get significant downpours. Severe weather chances are low but frequent lightning and brief gusty winds are possible and an isolated microburst is possible. Hot and humid weather will continue on Wednesday with much the same type of thunderstorm activity. Thursday a front moves closer and continues the showery and stormy weather although the temperatures should be somewhat cooler, upper 70's to mid 80's, and it will still be muggy with dew points in the upper 60's.. Game Time Forecast: Partly to mostly cloudy with temps in the low 70's to low 80's (cooler if thunderstorms have occurred) and the mid 70's by 11 PM. Dew points are generally in the low 70's throughout the metro area so it's very humid and muggy. Winds generally W at 3-6 MPH. Max gust 16 MPH. Showers around but model derived expected precipitation is generally <.1" as most showers should be decreasing in intensity by 7 PM and eventually dissipating by 8 PM although some could persist a bit longer I don't expect that tonight in the Philly area. Severe weather is not expected although heavy downpours and frequent lightning could occur, mostly before the game time hours but residual showers certainly possible through 8 PM or even a little later. Currently, a fairly large slow moving thunderstorm area is about 10-20 miles west of the ballpark. Lots of lightning and some pretty heavy downpours associated with this cluster. I expect it to move through between 5-7 PM with only residual light showers after that for a short time. As noted earlier it should weaken as it moves east and eventually dissipate east of the Philly area. Of course any heavy rainfall between now and 7 PM will significantly delay the start of tonight's game. I'll check the radar before game time. -PA GO BRAVES!!!
