I would agree but my definition of sticking with a guy isn’t necessarily carving his name in stone as an every day starter before spring training starts. But that’s been a philosophical difference I’ve had with our organization since Bobby Cox first became the manager.

Well yeah... I agree...
.... but it is "The Braves Way".

The AP is reporting that Dansby Swanson lost his arbitration case with the Braves and will make $6 million in 2021. He had been seeking a $6.7 million salary.

I wonder if our argument was based on more than last year, it would seem like it had to be. I’ve never paid attention to that with arbitration.!it would make sense to argue more than just one year at times. Plus with it only being 60 games I suppose that plays a role too...... Dansby is going to be an interesting case when it comes time for his next contract.

Brewers To Sign Travis Shaw www.mlbtraderumors.com/2021/02/brewers-discussing-deal-with-travis-shaw.html"Shaw will make $1.5MM with another potential $1.5MM in incentives if he earns a roster spot, Mark Feinsand of MLB.com relays." Have to wonder if the Braves were in on him at all at this price? He was a 25HR guy as a regular and would be a decent power bat off the bench and occasional starter.

I can see a lot of possibilities there including parting ways, even if they are happy with him as of now.

I can see a lot of possibilities there including parting ways, even if they are happy with him as of now. It's interesting, I don't recall hearing a single word from anyone about signing him. It reminds me of the Heyward situation, where there just wasn't talk of a deal because there wasn't going to be one. But the dynamics involved here are quite different. Does Dansby feel he's going to get a deal on the open market better than what we could give him and he's not interested in us? We've shown him a lot of leeway and patience, but then are we not interested in him long term? He's an interesting case because no matter what stats you look at, he's been about the 13th to 17th best SS in baseball during his time in the big leagues. I don't see that being worthy of a big contract. Obviously this season will have a lot of impact, so it will be interesting to watch for sure.

I have my doubts about Dansby ever becoming a top 5 or even top 10 SS. He's adequate, perhaps a bit better than that. He does bring nice intangibles to the table, I'll give him that. As a hitter, I'm just afraid that he is what he is, which is a streaky hitter with long stretches of nothing. He's 27 years old, so a big jump at this point isn't impossible, but it's unlikely.

I was hoping we would grab Gregorious last off-season and sign him for 3-4 years. But it’s pretty clear we’re going to hang onto and milk all the young affordable players for all we can while we can. I can’t argue with that when money is tight.

If Dansby could OPS .770 every year he’d be worth having in my opinion, with his glove and intangibles. But he needs to do that for a full year this season for me to believe he can do that consistently.

I think this is the year that will steer the Braves on Dansby. He has been streaky, but he has also had to deal with injuries that he was trying to fight through while playing.
If he remains healthy I think his numbers will be good enough to make a competitive deal. If he gets hurt again and has the inconsistencies again the Braves will finally accept that as his norm and won't commit.

I've always liked Dansby and received a fair amount of grief for it, lol
