With Freddie starting to have health issues more frequently I got to thinking about should we extend him or not and it has nothing to do with his age. Here is my thought if the NL goes to DH next season extend him but if they don't we may want to let he go and here is why. He is 6'5 and lanky I am sure I have missed someone but it seems of all the position players in history 6'5 or over only Dave winfield played more than 14 seasons in the field and only frank Howard played 14 seasons period. And both became DH to get to 14 seasons. Tall guys break down faster it seems. Just look at the tall guys who are playing now they seem to spend a lot of time on DL (Stanton, Judge) I know everyone looks at age but when no one 6'5 or taller ever seems to have a long career without DH maybe we shouldn't tie up a lot of money on Freddie to play 1B past his 14th season

The average length of a MLB career is 5.6 years.
There are much fewer players 6'5 and taller than there are shorter than that height.
Of course there are not that many players 6'5 or taller that last 14 years at the MLB level.
There is absolutely no evidence here that shows tall players break down quicker than anyone else.

Chipper is 6'4".
But I guess that doesn't qualify.

No it doesn't...
Amazingly if you go to 6'7 you will find no position player who lasted 14 years.

No it doesn't... Amazingly if you go to 6'7 you will find no position player who lasted 14 years. Conversely, Eddie Gaedel was 3'7" and only lasted one at bat, and he walked.
So there's actually proof that short players break down faster.

I don't know that tall guys necessarily break down faster. There are a lot fewer of them, and most are high profile players, so it may just be more noticeable. I haven't researched it, and I ain't gonna🤣

Another thought about Freddie--he was a full time starting major league player at the age of 21. How common is that really? Aren't most guys 23-25 before they have that kind of status? So when his deal is up after 2021 he will have just turned 32. He's been a very durable player during his career, I see no reason to worry right now. If his elbow is ongoing problem and gets 120 ABs this year that's a different story. I just read he's expected to start playing again next week. For now I'll assume he's going to be okay. Depending on how things go the next two seasons, I'd like to see us re-sign him for 3-4 years. He may even give us a decent discount just to stay with such a good and mostly young elite team. Whether he is the DH or Ball is the DH, we could definitely use Freddie for many more years if he's healthy.
Imagine Acuna 1st, Albies 2nd, Freddie 3rd, Riley 4th and Ball 5th if Riley pans out. With Pache, Waters, Camargo and Langeliers around to boot. Yikes.
God I just hope our rebuild catches up to the Faillies rebuild someday, bwahahahahahaha........
Throw in our pitching, and Chipper Jones as our manager starting in 2022.....

You know, I bet Chipper would be a damn good manager, but I don't see him ever doing that. He's almost 48 now, and worth a gazillion or so. He hasn't shown any indication that he wants to get back into the daily grind of being a manager. Seems I remember him saying he might be interested in a front office gig at one time, but never that he wanted to be a manager.

I thought he had said during his playing days he would like to manage someday. He has a great baseball mind.

One of the biggest problems with Freddie is that he's a dumbass who doesn't know when it's time to take a day off, plus he's managed by a dumbass who doesn't know when it's time to give him a day off.

I love Freeman he is my 2ND favorite brave and as much as I hate the DH I want it to come to NL just for Freeman. And love the lineup you showed. However Freeman missed over 30 games in both 2015 & 17 and should have missed time last yr with his elbow I hope this isn't becoming one of those weird patterns where a player is injured every other yr.

The good thing is we have two seasons to decide. Prior to these injuries he had been extremely durable and he’s not that old. You don’t have to be old to have chronic injury issues but it’s way more likely as you age.

Chipper managing -- you could do worse, he cannot be any worse that Ozzie Guillen or Bobby Valentine for sure
Would he get into coaching full time for a short time or, would he manage in the minors for a yr or two to get his feet on the ground as a manager
As for a Freddie Freeman extension -- would not go more than five yrs. If it takes an 8 to 10 yr deal at age 32 I say thank you for the great yrs but only a fool would pay a guy that long. And there are a few fool GMs out there
Harper and Stanton are fool contracts. I never thought Pujols would decline the way he did
Even a smaller market team like the Reds overextended in terms of yrs with Joey Votto
