Chuck Tanner was a drunk. Really? I don't know about Tanner (not saying he was or was not) but alot of those old school players from more than a half century ago were big time drinkers and no one said anything about it till stories came out later Ball Four took some of the hero worship for what it was, hell, they are all just human with faults Tanner did lose control of that Pirates clubhouse after the championship as evidenced of the Pittsburgh drug scandal back in the early -mid 80's - why he was brought here well, who knows but it was not the only bad move back in those days

One of these days we might see 15 man pitching staffs the way some of the thinking of today is going
Who pays to see openers for pitching matchups -- cannot see how its sustainable long term

I was an avid reader of baseball material for many years, and that was one of many things that seemed to be common knowledge by people within and around the game.

Well, that is something I did not know maybe that is why he lost control of his teams later in his career He had fair to middling success with the White Sox, (for what he had to work with), one competitive yr in Oakland in 76 and competitive teams early in his Pirate yrs. He was known as the only manager who could communicate with Dick Allen and that one special yr with the Pirates in 79 and then the Pittsburgh Drug Scandal after that before he failed with the Braves He did have a reputation as a players manager for a time, maybe too much of one He was pretty much gone from the game after his time with the Braves, got replaced by Russ Nixon who never had alot to work with as a manager in a couple of stops w/the Reds and Braves

Would be unfair

From your name to your overall attitude.. you do a lot of Braves loathing. well to be honest I have been a die hard braves fan for 41 yrs and yes when you care about something truely you do get sideways when it is going bad and there is no excuse for it. I UNDERSTAND there is people like yourself who considers Bobby cox successful because of the division titles. However because of the World Series losses and playoff losses I consider him a failure because he had more Talent to work with then any other team in most of those years as for cheaters I think COPPY and his cheating was the best thing this organization has done in years
