Seriously, its time the commissioner's office steps in and gets involves with the BS today's umpires start up
Some of these guys are so out of shape you wonder if they can even touch their toes
And there should be an age limit -- at least in the other sports it seems like the officials are in decent shape (MLS, NBA, NHL and even the NFL refs are in far better shape than these guys)
And with the attitude these guys have is it not time for these guys to go through some counseling tests -- power hungry fools like fans pay to see these guys perform
There needs total reform of all aspects of MLB umpires - too many of these guys are no GD good at what they do & seem to be there to antagonize players and coaches
Example was tonight's game - the worst of em all is Doug Eddings from a Braves fan perspective but there are other bad guys

They have a union. GM can't just "step in and get involved".

The commissioner's office can start the process of doing something -- the umpires union is hurting the game
For sure they can get guys who are in reasonable shape - that should be considered in the next contract
And some guys have been around too long- no one should be around as long as Joe West is - some of these guys are true troublemakers

You don't really know how Unions and contracted employee/employer relationships work, do you?
No need to answer... rhetorical question.

This is one union that should be busted, not saying it will or can be, but MLB can address issues in the next contract negotiations Today's umpires are confrontational and lazy

Its the attitude these guys have like they think they are above the plebian players who are actually the show
And for the dough that the game has, you tell me they cannot do anything about this?
I hope they can break their union - of any of the sports these guys are truly replacable and we know we have the technology to call balls and strikes
Pls -- lets be honest and admit that I am right that the game deserves umps who are in better shape than these guys -- do the other sports have fat out of shape guys officiating the other sports. That is the one thing I am right on -- tell me if I am wrong

What's interesting is that I think they really got worse when replay came around. I am NOT saying there is a correlation per se', but it does seem it really went off a cliff about the same time. My issue is hating unions. They protect the incompetent, almost always. Before I sold my business and stopped dealing with hiring people, my worst employees were always ex-union guys. I finally just stopped hiring anyone who had ever been in any sort of union. I think there was a time and place for them back when employers had unsafe working conditions and worked immigrants and took unfair advantage of the downtrodden and such... but that day has long passed. Now unions mainly just protect the incompetent.

I've been watching baseball for 30 years and umpires have always been know-it-all douches. I don't see them as being any worse than they were 20 years ago. 22 years ago was the Eric Gregg travesty. I've seen Cox get rung dozens of times because of dumbass umpires. I've seen umpires show up players, managers, and even fans over the years. There's nothing about the umps today that's any different than the umps of yesterday, IMO.

Yes there is.. they've always been wanting to make themselves a part of the game when the best work they do is when no one remembers anything they did, but the accuracy of their calls has taken a definite turn for the worse.

Wanting to be part of the game makes sense when you think about it, as I imagine the vast majority of them wanted to be players but weren't good enough. Maybe they just can't fully accept not being good enough to play? Why that would bother someone is beyond me, since not being good enough applies to about 99.99% of those of us who played. I really think that's part of it with a lot of these guys.

I have been a fan of the game since the late 60's
This day in time umpires seem to be too quick in ejecting players and losing their temper -- seems we have some ill tempered guys out there
There are some good guys, but there seem to be more and more with a quick exit finger
And its been going on since the 90's -- I remember one incident when Wally Bell followed Ryan Klesko to the dugout yappng at the player when Klesko was walking away a bit frustrated with either a call or himself.
Wally Bell was a troublemaker, and of course the incidents with Doug Eddings well, you can write a nice short story on that one
And remember when Bill Hohn took it so personal he ejected a fan out of the Ted -- Doug Hahn was another one
At least Hohn is gone and well rid of -- will we live long enough to see the retirement of Joe West? Or will he keep trudging his fat ass out there till he is 95?
These guys are more and more unlikable as time goes on - I do not know what Rob Manfred and his staff can do to fix it
Can they get some of these lard asses to at least get in shape and look like a sports official
