With the way the pen has been of late, do we really have to add to that unit?
Swarzak and Blevins have been nice set up additions and with Luke doing the job as closer, Oh, and the arms of Touki and Newcomb showing improvement in command, we are not in bad shape
I see no reason to overpay for a Shane Greene now - and AA did not give much for the two vets -- shrewed low key moves
Some might say the closer is only 3 outs, but not all outs are the same. To me, I compare the value of a closer like that of a goalie in hockey, especially in the playoffs. The closer role when its going well sets up the motion and function of the rest of the pen
Anyone who has been watching these cup playoffs understand what I mean, the teams that had the best playoff goaltending are in the finals
Different sport, simailar principle to me
Luke is handling the role with 3 outs and that is to his credit -- how did we know he could do it
Look at the Red Sox this yr, they have let a few games get away cause they do not have a real closer like they have had. Barnes and Braiser, not bad pitchers, excellent set up men but there have been a few games that have gotten away. Its not the only reason for their decline but give them a real closer I say they are 37-28 instead of 34-31 easily. 9 over 500 looks a hell of alot better than 3 over
When Luke took over the job and got it done, things have been much better and the pen is more trustworthy

I sure hope that Folty can be the Folty of 2018 at some point, and Gausman, hope for the best but hard to expect much
Dallas K - get him ready and if it takes an extra week or so so be it, haste makes waste

Trouble with Demeritte is he's been around too long. I think he was Rule 5 eligible this past offseason, but nobody would have committed to him on their 25-man for a full year.
After what yes doing in AAA now, somebody will take him in next year's Rule 5. So if we don't trade him this Summer, we likely lose him.

Demeritte reminds me of Ron Gant. You'd think somebody would take a chance on a guy like him.

I hope we don't trade Trey Harris. All he's done is hit in the low minors and his name is easy to write in the prospect tread.

So his first outing was promising... what was it, 77 pitches?

Bump - have to say that for Dallas' comeback this was a disappointment
Not good much needed improvement. Its about not giving up runs and as it stands now its 4 runs given up in the middle of the 5th
And the bases loaded - an overall grade of unsatisfactory
I am not happy with it

One positive take away was that I was encouraged by the amount of soft contact.

Of course no mention of Oz and how he got the ball rolling, just more of the same stuff.

Seriously... first game and stepping into a situation where everyone else is in mid-season form. They made some solid defensive plays and we didn't.
What gets an unsatisfactory rating is your understanding of baseball.

I expect improvement for sure - the soft contact is nice but in the end its the results that count Next time out hope for 6 innings and holding the line on the run prevention and base runners allowed

What gets an unsatisfactory rating is your understanding of baseball. First game back or not, he is still out there and still has to get the job done Everyone being in mid season form and he is not does not matter to me, - he choose to sign late and that was his perogative and yes, his right Its not an excuse to not succeed - he has to get better and I think he will - still think it was a worthwhile one yr gamble And of course Ozzie made that ridiculous throw, if I were Snitker I would call him out after the game - old school managers used to do that In the name of Dick Williams, Billy Martin and Leo Durocher things are not done the way they used to be Hope he does better next time around and the result is a team W

HE got the job done fairly well all things considered.... like his defense letting him down.

Nats came in hitting almost as well as the Braves have, as of late. It was also Keuchel’s first start against ML hitting since last October. You also have to consider the fact that there are times when they do get the job done, it’s jist the other team got the job done better. The issue I find with your mindset is that you always think they should get the job done. If they always got the job done they’d go 162-0. How realistic is that? It’s not. At least 60 times a year the other team just gets the job done better.
