I don't hate the idea at all. The game will change considerably when they do. There some independent league doing it this year. I'm very interested in the results, especially how it changes the way hitters and pitchers attack the zone.

I cant wait until there is a spinner in the dirt and the robot signals "strike".

I have no doubt it would even change the way the pitches look to us as mere viewers dramatically--I pay attention sometimes to where pitches actually end up when the catcher catches them, and try to think back to the days when we didn't have the strike zone box on our TV screen. Just putting that box up has changed the way we see pitches. I wonder if they go to electronic calling of balls and strikes if they'll leave that box up on our TV screen. Seems like we wouldn't need that anymore, and if it's there it has the capability of raising controversy if we see one thing on TV and the robot tells us something else. Of course if the box is gone then fans are going to scream because we'll see a catcher catch one three inches off the ground and have the machine cal it a strike. Controversy either way, but I'd still rather have it done by computer.
Another thing I've just recently thought about, and I still haven't done much monitoring, but I'm thinking that box we see on TV never changes no matter who the hitter is. But it should, right? I've thought about using Freddie Freeman and Ozzie Albies for comparison, there's such a huge difference in their strike zones in reality. But I swear that box stays the exact same for both of them, I need to really pay attention to that to see.
But give me the computer calling the pitches. I've never liked pitch framing or how terrible the umps are at calling strikes. I pitched for 15 years, and I always knew if every single pitch was actually a strike or wasn't. When I was a kid we often had umpires calling balls and strikes from behind the mound, and they always did better than guys doing it from behind the plate. I caught some too, and I never knew really what pitches were strikes and which weren't, not for 100% sure, like I could from the mound. So I don't even see how umps can really be expected to tell from behind the plate. Especially with all the movement MLB pitchers get.

Everybody shut the f*** up over balls and strikes, zero tolerance, whatever the computer says then so be it. You say a word you're automatically thrown down an open elevator shaft.

The best "confrontation" ever was the Braves minor league coach Phil Wellman when threw the rosin bag like a hand grenade in the middle of a long diatribe.
Anything involving Earl Weaver was always epic.
The best one I ever saw in a game I was playing in, I was maybe 16 and playing on an traveling team, we were playing a game on the road and the ump was just raping our pitcher something awful. The guy we had pitching was real mouthy on a good day, so he's giving it to the ump all day. At times flat our screaming at him from the mound. After the 4th inning, we come off the field and the umpire comes over to our dugout and says to the kid "listen, knock it off, I don't need you out here making a jackass out of me." Our pitcher didn't miss a beat and replied "No you're right about that, you're doing a fine enough job if it on your own." Threw him out of the game on the spot, obviously, but it was worth it.

Umps are part of the game. NO to robo umps. Period. End of story.

Not every "part of the game" is worthy of keeping imho

Actually what it is time for is a merit based system of being allowed behind the plate instead of "everybody gets a trophy". It doesn't matter how bad you are at it, when it's your turn they let you do it.
What bothers me about robo-ump is that something less radical to improve the situation hasn't even been tried. There should be some way to take evaluate umps behind the plate and take the bad ones and stick them on 3rd base duty. Hell... send them to the minors and promote the top minors guys to the majors.
How many years before there are just no umps at all on the field and they just flash the results of all plays on the jumbotron?

I'd rather not have it, but it doesn't bother me as much as certain things they want to change. If they change this I wonder if they'll continue doing fox track? Sometimes I wish there was an option where it wasn't on the screen.
Edit: The more I typed that out the more I thought about it brought things about how I like the human side of umping. I saw something where the likes of Glavine and Maddux got more calls because they could hit that same spot 9 out of 10 times and well I'm in agreement with that. A little favoritism doesn't bother me so long as it's not overboard. Also the umpire's job is being dehumanized, what a boring pathetic job it's going to be behind the plate if this is changed. So much for being prideful of your job and I did like how a few would get really into how they called strikes and strikeouts. I suppose they still could do that, but really would they be like that if they didn't feel like they're accomplishing a pretty hard job of calling balls and strikes.

Okay but does that mean you are okay with just taking umps off the field altogether? I mean honestly we have the technology to just flash the results of a play on the jumbotron.
