I'm a big fan of covers, IF the person covering doesn't try to do it exactly the same as the original. Because 99% of the time it falls woefully short and the coverer just looks/sounds stupid. If you're going to cover something add some kind of your own flavor or originality to it.
I thought this cover version was good and worth listening to. But Ronnie Van Zant was one of my heroes my whole life, so this is a no brainer.
I will say that I don't think a comparison should be made of a studio version versus a live version, or an acoustic version versus an entire band version--both of those aspects were screw ups by the guy who posted this.
This would have been a much fairer comparison--live versions always have a better fuller sound in my opinion, the reverb is always different live than in the studio, and almost all singers have more of an edge to their voices in live versions. The guy doing this should have used this version of the Skynyrd band:

That has always been my favorite Merle Haggard song, I've found several covers on youTube I liked but this was the best. I have tried to watch videos from each of these guys and never liked any of them but I really like the way they did this song. They did another good one in that little show. The Marcus King guy.....I almost never care about anyone's appearance, especially if they make good music, but my god he looks like the two ugliest people on the entire planet got together and made a baby. I feel bad saying that but there's not much room to deny it.

I'm always looking for good covers and prior failures are not always predictive of future success. Marcus King looks like the love child of Louie Anderson and Janet Yellen who grew up trying to look like Ronnie Van Zant.

I like that, but good grief he needs to keep a hat on to cover up that forehead.

I was looking at a weather radar map just now and saw Clarksville,TN and it made me think about that old song "Last Train To Clarksville."
I decided to watch the video for it, and it amazes me that 56 years later I still hate the Mucking Fonkeys so much that I still want to punch every single one of them right in their stupid little faces.

I find it amazing that a band can still play music like this 30 years after selling out for commercial success. How can they do this and still look themselves in the mirror??? Their first 3-4 albums were great, their debut album kicked massive ass and is still one of my favorite 5 albums of all time.....and they they sold their souls in the late 80's and early 90's more than any band ever and put out all that pure crap that made them millions. Oh well!
Level with God and you're in tune with the universe Talk with yourself and you'll hear what you want to know Got to rise above because below it's only getting worse Life in time will take you where you want to go
