Braves insert slumping Acuna into leadoff spot WASHINGTON -- Braves manager Brian Snitker entered the season's second half with Ronald Acuna Jr. as his leadoff hitter, admitting his decision was influenced by the desire to allow Ozzie Albies to continue finding comfort batting in front of Freddie Freeman and Nick Markakis. "It's just about keeping him in a spot where he's been more successful," Snitker said. "I don't think the approach is going to be any different in either role. He's an impressive guy." View Full Game Coverage Albies has positioned himself for National League MVP Award consideration, but the All-Star second baseman wasn't nearly as productive in the two stretches he sat at the top of the order in place of Ender Inciarte, whose prolonged struggles have led to him being removed from the leadoff spot for the third time this season. Once Snitker determined he wanted to continue filling his lineup's second spot with Albies, he decided to give the top slot to Acuna. The 20-year-old outfielder has struggled since returning from his month-long DL stint, but he had some success as a leadoff hitter at the Minor League level. "[Acuna] has hit leadoff a majority of his career, and Albies' numbers are better hitting No. 2 than they are hitting leadoff," Snitker said. "So we'll try it and see." Acuna entered the All-Star break having hit .212 (11-for-52) with a .255 on-base percentage since returning on June 29 from a month-long disabled list stint. Albies hit just .234 with a .282 OBP as a leadoff hitter. Inciarte has hit .227 with a .297 OBP in the top spot. The Braves' struggles to find consistency from the leadoff spot have created reason to at least contemplate moving Markakis into the role. But Snitker understandably wants another shot at taking advantage of the dynamic component Acuna and Albies can bring with their speed when paired together at the top of the lineup. Gohara's struggles extended Luiz Gohara has squandered yet another opportunity presented by the Braves, who have been more than patient with him. The left-handed pitching prospect has underachieved throughout this season. Gohara's fastball sat around 92-93 mph as he allowed seven hits and four runs over 4 1/3 innings for Triple-A Gwinnett on Thursday night. A strong outing would have earned the 21-year-old southpaw a chance to return to the Majors to start Tuesday night's game against the Marlins. But it now looks like that start will be given to Max Fried. "Gohara's velocity spiked a little bit, but it's not consistently where you'd like to see it," Snitker said. "I've seen him really, really good at the end of last year, and he's still not there yet." Gohara gained attention last year when his fastball consistently rested above 95 mph in five September starts. He has been used as both a starter and reliever, bouncing back and forth from the Majors to Triple-A this season. The Braves are hoping a consistent stretch in one role will help him get back on track. www.mlb.com/braves/news/ronald-acuna-jr-put-in-braves-leadoff-spot/c-286554090

Braves No. 12 prospect Bryse Wilson has been nearly untouchable lately for Double-A Mississippi. After throwing seven scoreless frames, Wilson has turned in a scoreless performance in three of his past four starts. The 20-year-old right-hander matched his season high with nine strikeouts -- a total he's reached in three of his past four starts -- as he threw 64 of his 99 pitches for strikes. Wilson also walked one and gave up three hits.

Sanchez stinking it up this inning. If he gets out of it, he's my hero. If he lets runs in, he's in the doghouse until he pitches a CG shutout.
