Is our new 4th OF about to get busted for steroids? Or did he have some career altering revelation at the plate, ala Jose Bautista when he went to Toronto?
Dude has never really hit a lick at any level before, comes to Atlanta's AA and AAA teams as a 25 year old and he's suddenly Thor?
Hope it's legit, but it sure smells fishy to me ...

When he inevitably hits 5 homers in a single game which the Braves win 5-4 and subsequently gets busted for 'roids, will we have to forfeit the contest? This concerns me.

I temporarily locked this tread, but it's back open for discussion about Michael Reed.
I only moderate treads when it's in best interest of the bored.
Let's just try and refrain from making unfounded allegations about Braves players, and this was very close to an allegation.

Clarification here...
I am not trying to censor anyone, but I wanted to close the tread until I had a chance to think about what was being said here. After thinking about it and messaging the OP, I reopened it.
That is all, and carry on.

Thank you HMF, appreciate your reconsideration.
For the rest of the board, let me be clear that I have absolutely no evidence of anything underhanded on the part of Reed. I'm merely blown away by his offensive performance this year, and simply don't know what to think of it. Is he a legitimate prospect, albeit an old one? Could he be a Bautista-like late bloomer? Does anyone have any observations about changes in his swing or approach that can explain the turn-around?
My only intent with the reference to PEDs is that, unfortunately, we've seen this before. It's not a stretch to see a mid-20s MiLB player potentially go down the wrong road in an attempt to get his call up, so I recognize it's certainly conceivable that could have happened here. But again, there's no evidence of that -- I'm hoping others have direct observations that can help explain the performance spike.

Well one thing we know for sure, Reed is no Danny Santana. Thank god we still have Danny on the big club. He's does so many things........well.........crappy, to be honest. But at least he's versatile at being crappy. Being crappy in 8 different ways is so much better than being crappy at 1 or 2.

If you want the facts on how Reed is doing it, look no further than his .450+ BABIP this year.

A .450 BABIP explains a lot. I will continue under the assumption that he really does just love to hit the weight room.

I never heard to Micheal Reed is he even a legit MLB guy? He was a minor league signing for us, just a random 25 y/o guy we picked up. But this year year, he's absolutely killed AA and AAA, after never doing much offensively.

If you want the facts on how Reed is doing it, look no further than his .450+ BABIP this year. The BABIP is definitely unsustainable, but I assume it's partially influenced by better/harder contact? His SLG% is way up, so has he suddenly joined the fly ball revolution after being a GB specialist for his career?

At a certain level a hitters approach would explain a high babip, but after that it’s pure luck. Look at it like this, his avg is like .370 with a .470 babip. Imagine what it would be if it were a league average .300 babip. He’d be hitting like .250.

Sure, but BABIP doesn't account for HRs, of which he has 9 in half a season. He's never once reached double-digits in his career, so he's got some kind of power spike. Addionally, he's pacing for something like 40 doubles this year, so he's doing more than just getting lucky with some seeing-eye singles.
I'm not sure how reliable minor league stats are, but fangraphs says he's increased his line-drive % substantially this year, which should explain the BABIP and power spike. So why is he hitting the ball so much more squarely this year? Random hot streak that's destined to fizzle, or something more direct?
