From this date in Braves lore...Sometimes to our benefit sometimes to our disadvantage, we seem to be everywhere in history....
1970 The Braves ruin the debut of Riverfront Stadium, defeating the Reds, 8-2. In the first inning, Hank Aaron hits the park's first home run off Cincinnati's starter Jim McGlothlin. 1978 Giant first baseman Willie McCovey, on an 0-2 pitch thrown by Jamie Easterly, launches his 500th career home run over the left field fence, becoming the 12th player to accomplish the feat. Stretch's historic homer occurs in the second inning of the opener of a doubleheader, which the Giants sweep from the Braves at Atlanta Fulton County Stadium, 10-9 and 10-5. 2000 Trailing 8-2 with two outs in the eighth-inning, Mike Piazza's tie-breaking three-run homer completes a 10-run miracle comeback as the Mets stun the Braves, 11-8. Nine of the runs were driven in with two outs, and the ten runs equal the most ever scored in an inning by the Mets.
And sometimes there are just some interesting things....
1909 The Cubs spoil the Pirates' debut at Forbes Field, 3-2. The new state-of-the-art ballpark, named for General John Forbes, who was an officer in the French and Indian War, is the first stadium to be made completely of steel and poured concrete. 1962 Due to an unusually thick fog at Colt Stadium, the game against the Reds is called after seven innings, giving the Colt .45's a 7-3 victory over Cincinnati. The shortened contest allows Houston's skipper Harry Craft to get to the hospital in time for the birth of his first daughter. 1983 Lance Junker hits two grand slams in the ninth inning of the Redwood Pioneers' 16-5 victory over the Class-A Padres at Reno's Moana Stadium. The 23 year-old California League slugger, who comes to bat for the second time in the frame after the catcher drops a two-out pop up in front of home plate, becomes the third professional player to accomplish the feat, joining Ken Myers (1947 - Las Vegas/Sunset League) and Armando Flores (1952 - Laredo Apaches/Gulf Coast League). 2016 Coastal Carolina wins its first national championship in any sport with a 4-3 victory over Arizona in Game 3 of the College World Series finals. The Chanticleers become the first team in sixty years to win the title in its first CWS appearance, a feat also accomplished by Minnesota in 1956. (I put this in only because the word “Chanticleer” caught my attention........it's “a name given to a rooster, especially in fairy tales”...or apparently a 12 all male voice a cappella singing group from San Francisco....so now we know....)

TRUE STORY: In 1970, DURING THE ALL-STAR game in Cincinnati, as a youngster with the family headed to Xenia, Ohio, we passed by the then new Riverfront Stadium in Cincy WHILE THE ALL-STAR game was being played. We were listening to the game on the car radio. I will never forget seeing the impressive lights of the Stadium as we drove by. My younger brother and I begged Mom & Dad to stop an let us walk abound the stadium, but hey refused. They did stop on the way back home to N.C. at the Stadium, and they let us in and I clearly remember walking down toward the field to look at the "Astro-Turf". A security guard let my brother and I walk on the "turf" for a few minutes and I remember being thrilled to be on the field and look at the wonderful stadium.

That was a really nice stadium...they were pretty lenient about getting down near the field and talking to the players, and a friend of mine and I had a couple nice conversations with Rick Mahler over a series there....I also saw Claudell Washington hit two home runs there in one game (off Mario Soto, I THINK!) and one was hit so hard the Dave Parker (of "Cobra" fame) never even bothered to turn around.

Grant McAuley @grantmcauley #Braves farmhand Bruce Zimmermann struck out 10 batters in his Double-A @mbraves debut last night (6.1 IP, 4H, 1R, 3BB, 10K). He has 109 K on the season, most in the entire Atlanta organization (all levels) and second most in all of minor league baseball (Dean Kremer, 110 K).

I'd get more excited, but him and Danny Santana keep managing to find their way back on our big league roster no matter how many times they go away......

Here's hoping Fried comes of age this go round. I really think he can be a solid pitcher.
