UP NEXT:
Padres: RHP Jordan Lyles will make his eighth start of the season -- his high mark since 10 starts with Colorado in 2015 -- as the four-game series continues on Saturday.
Braves: LHP Sean Newcomb will look for his eighth win as he makes his second start of the season against the Padres. He pitched six scoreless innings in a 14-1 win at San Diego on June 5th.
TRAINER'S ROOM:
Padres: After throwing four hitless innings in a rehab start Thursday night for Class-A Lake Elsinore, LHP Joey Lucchesi (right hip strain) will throw a bullpen session on Saturday which will determine if he's ready to come off the DL. Lucchesi, who has been out since May 15, could start on Tuesday or Wednesday against Oakland, or he could make another rehab start.
Braves: RHP Mike Foltynewicz, who left Saturday's start with triceps tightness, felt good after playing catch. The team won't make a decision about his next start until he throws off a mound. ... OF Ronald Acuna Jr. (left knee sprain) ran the bases and took grounders and fly balls in left field. He will test the knee by running harder on Saturday.

Lots of action from around Braves world on this date.... 1916 At Braves Field, right-hander Tom Hughes no-hits the Pirates, 2-0. 'Salida Tom' will finish the season with a 16-3 record, the best win-loss percentage in the National League, for the third-place Boston club.
1956 Charlie Grimm, after the Braves lose the 12th game of their last 17 contests, resigns as the team's manager, being immediately replaced by coach Fred Haney. The 56 year-old skipper, who is offered a personnel position within the organization, leaves the dugout with a 24-22 record, only 3.5 games behind the league-leading Pirates.
1984 Mario Soto's second suspension of the season is the result of the Cincinnati starter firing a baseball at a group of opposing players, striking Braves coach Joe Pignatano after he punched Claudell Washington, who was being restrained by umpire Lanny Harris as he charged the mound. The Reds suspends he fiery right-hander for three games due to this incident with Washington, who had been the target of his brushback pitches, getting five games off for pushing the home plate ump.
1991 Otis Nixon establishes a National League record and ties the 1912 major league mark set by the A's Eddie Collins by swiping six bases in one game. Crime doesn't pay when the Braves outfielder's thievery cannot overcome a 7-6 loss to Montreal at Olympic Stadium.
2001 In a game that features thousands of swarming moths, the Red Sox beat the Braves and the bugs in extra innings at Turner Field, 9-5. Although the swarm has little bearing on the outcome of the game, the insects clearly bothered some players, including Dave Martinez, who claimed to having sucked one into his mouth.
2005 After a pitch goes between his legs, Richmond Braves flycatcher Esix Snead charges the mound and pummels the Syracuse SkyChiefs hurler, David Bush. The action incites an International League brawl which will result in 40 players, a coach, and a manager being fined and/or suspended, including a ten-day hiatus for Snead.
And a couple of first from around MLB....
1893 At the Southeast Diamond of the Polo Grounds in New York, the Gothams, a team will that eventually be known as the Giants, offer free admission to both escorted and unescorted women, making the promotion the first 'Ladies' Day' in baseball history. The female fans see their hometown favorites beat the Cleveland Spiders, 5-2.
1992 During a pregame ceremony at Anaheim Stadium, the Angels become the first of three teams to retire Nolan Ryan's number. The hard-throwing right-hander, who compiled a 138-121 record along with a 3.06 ERA in 291 games with California, will also have his number retired by the Astros and Rangers in 1996.

Speaking of Nolan Ryan, I heard on the MLB channel on my Sirius-XM radio in the car whereby they were talking about an extra inning game that Nolan Ryan pitched once where he threw something like 247 pitches!!!! Imagine that today with the pampered starting pitcher babies today! And, they said he p'bly pitched again after a 3 day rest (the norm back then for Starters)......

Yeah, back in the 70's....235 pitches in 13 innings with a no decision....I know that only because I almost included it on the June 14 history.

Also, at least to my knowledge, Ryan never had injury issues. Of course, he also probably never played 100 games of "travel ball" when he was 10 years old, either.

My agent, that lyin' piece of crap, guaranteed I'd be in The Bigs by July...he never once mentioned anything about having to work for anything, and said me being a veteran presents was good enough...

Mark Bowman @mlbbowman The Braves have placed Folty on the DL with right triceps tightness and Teheran (tomorrow's starter) has been activated. Folty will be eligible to be activated next Saturday. There had already been thought he wouldn't make his next start until Friday.
