Yates muddles through a scoreless 8th on 28 pitches. He still scares me. Doesn't throw enough strikes! His command is just not there, he does not have a consistent release point. He can throw some good pitches each outing, but he's also all over the place most of the time.

This might not be a popular opinion, but IF Yates figures it out over the course of the season, this could still turn out being a savvy move by AA.

Yates and Anderson were very effective, if not elite closers for their former teams before elbow injuries. They aren't the same pitchers at all...but can still be effective. I applaud AA taking a flyer on both and hoping to get lucky.

It wasn’t that long ago Yates was a great closer, his stuff is still really good at times. The potential is definitely there if he can just harness his release point and command. I have no problem with him at all, I’d just rather not see him late in tight games until his command is better. It feels like he’s getting a little better but he’s still all over the place too much for me to trust him late in close games.

Hopefully Raisel Iglesias coming back will render that moot. Then maybe down the line when they get their command back/better they can be used in leverage situations without stressing us. Yates has the stuff to close when he's on with command.
